I'm in the market for a low-cost scanner, Win XP compatible. I'll be using it for one particular purpose - to scan family photographs for an online genealogical project. Does anyone have recommendations?

I recommend you pay a little more and get it somewhere else. If it is defective, BB will probably not honor any warranty, and will blame you for the defect. They will refuse to repair without charge, and if you pay them, they will damage it further.

pay no attention to our poster here, he has hijacked lots of threads with his negative shopping experiences. Because each BB Store is different , posters here do not neccesarily have the views and opinions of other stores except for their own..
I found a scanner for $70 that will help you just out fine for your situation.
Here it is :

Doesn't sound like a very ethical company, just one that wants to sell you stuff and then pass the buck. But what about the manufacturer's warranty? Isn't that valid no matter what?
Unless you purchase an extended product warranty from Best Buy , the manufacturers warranty applies to every electronic item purchased.

Why the disclaimer, hockey? Is there some reason people might think you are "a representative of Best Buy or an employee of them"?
I'm just trying to help people out by warning them.
Sexy-j, I have personal experience with BB geeks at the Annapolis MD store simply refusing to honor warranties. Basically, they said "we're not going to do anything about it and there's nothing you can do about it, so get out."
With Dell computers, unfortunately, and maybe other stuff, there is no manufacturers warranty - if you buy it at BB, only BB can service it.
