Please help with virus removal

A couple of days ago I click on a link through Google and a program was downloaded on my computer.  It is an anitvirus program/advertisment and now I can't get rid of it.  I tried to uninstall it using Add or Remove programs but it didn't work.  I tried to go to Program Files and delete the file but it won't let me.  Does anyone have an idea on how to get rid of it?

Re: Please help with virus removal

Is this, per chance, AntiVirus 2008?  If it is, there is an unistall file hidden in your directories somewhere.  Look for unistall antivirus 2008 or something like that.  If you don't find that file, you will play heck getting it off of your machine!  I played heck and got it off and THEN I found the uninstall file while I was getting rid of junk files.  It should be located in the directory all of your downloads go to by default.  My daughter picked it up on my laptop from MySpace!  Boy!  What a nuisance.  Let me know if this hits the mark.  If not, we'll go from there.

That sounds like the same thing.  So then it's somewhere on my C drive and I have to find it?

Re: Please help with virus removal

Yes, you will have to find it.  It should be where your default download directory is.  Search C:\ for these possibilities:

1)  uninstall*.*

2) *2008.*

3) *antivirus*.*

Copy the the first one an paste it into your search.  If you find nothing, move to two, etc.  Hopefully, this will find it for you.  Let me know and we will continue if necessary.

Apparently it's called Internet Antivirus Pro.  I'm trying to run a search on all folders but haven't come up with anything yet.

Re: Please help with virus removal

Bring your computer to geek squad and they can get rid of it for you. i believe is around $200.

laney will argue for the fact is "over charging" but hey i don't agree or disagree with her, all i have to say it is up to you. is it worth the $200 to save your files. if you don't remove it soon, the virus will spread to your document files and may corrupt your files to a point where's it's unretrievable.

Yes...$200 is a fortune to remove nuisance software, which is what this is.  Do you have $200 bucks to spend?  If you don't go here...

Re: Please help with virus removal

Okay...anyone reading this who IS NOT computer savvy, listen up.  UNLESS you want to pay big bucks to fix things that you shouldn't have to fix to start with, do these few basic things.  Zone Alarm Security Suite is like $39.99 per year and is great.  Firewall, anitvirus, antispam, password vault, etc., etc., and it will stealth your IP address so that hackers can't find you.  There are other good ones, too, like MacAffee and CA Secuity Suite.  If you don't have a router or some other type of hardware firewall, get one!  US Robotics has a router that is a good firewall and is less than $50 bucks!  Lastly, but most important, stay away from ify websites.  I know the internet is fun but it is also dangerous as this little nuisance quasi virus is proof!  This is not the only one of these little ditties...there are more and they will come in unnoticed by most antivirus software because they are not tagged like viruses.  Zone Alarm has caught quite a few, but it didn't catch Antivirus 2008!  Unless you do these things, you will be paying, according to the other poster, $200 per removal!  Lastly, as Antivirus 2008 has proven, you are never 100% safe.  If you do not want to pay the big bucks...arm yourself...arm yourself with knowledge and that knowledge is what is on your computer, where everything is, what a registry is, what the cmd command is and how to use it, and what loads into your computer at startup, etc.  That is the best protection you can have.  I never touched a computer until I was 32 years old and I am 49 now.  My degree is not in computers...it's Business Administration, but computers is how I earn my living!  It's not rocket science and if I can do it, you can do it!  Not only will you be safer and your pocketbook fatter, you will actually have fun!
