To start, I'm not very computer smart. I am going into electrical engineering next year and want to have a computer that can handle the necessary programs. I was hoping someone could tell me what kind of things I should be looking for or suggest some possible options to use as references.

You are smart enough to figure out how to post a message here on this forum.  That's a great start.

Some thoughts....

• what's your budget?
• I recommend talking to previous students what they use.
• Talking to the instructor is very helpful.  Does the software work on Windows, MAC or both?  Will it work with Windows 8?
• Do you want the large screen of a desktop? Or the portability of a laptop?  Laptop screens come in different sizes.
