Pairing a Sonnet eGPU with a MacBook Air

Hello!! I am reaching out because I am planning to buy a Sonnet eGPU to pair with my MacBook Air in order to render videos faster. I was wondering if I need to purchase additional accessories to make this happen?

Thank you so much!!

Which model and year of macbook air? Some of those just don't have the ram or drive space to make it worth it.

I don't know if that would make much difference.  Rendering is more a procedure based on RAM and CPU, the eGPU would be on the final product output from the video editing

Re: Pairing a Sonnet eGPU with a MacBook Air

Hey there, CourtneyLiu,

Thanks for connecting with us about this! We love to hear that you want to upgrade your computing power with an external GPU.

It doesn't appear that we sell the Sonnet unit you mentioned, and as such I'm not terribly familiar with it. That said, if you have a Macbook with Thunderbolt 3 and High Sierra 10.13.4 I would advise taking a look at the Razer - Core X Thunderbolt 3 External GPU Graphics Enclosure. It can be a great plug-and-play solution once you've added a graphics card.

If you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Re: Pairing a Sonnet eGPU with a MacBook Air

Make sure the GPU is MacOS compatibale, so basicly AMD. Also, make sure you use the left ports on your macbook if you have the model with 4 ports, the left ones get higher bandwith, this isnt a problem if you only have the 2 port model. In general, external gpus get less perfomrance that regular gpus inside of computers, so your not going to get the same $ to perfomance as other people, just keep that in mind. Also, if you can, use an external monitor with the eGPU and keep your macbook closed, that allows the eGPU to save bandwith sending the immage back to the macbook, and thus can give you a couple % increase in preformacne
