No Android Update For NW-PS11A8100?

I purchased this Android tablet back in April 2018. It was working great for the first few months, but then I started getting the "XXXXXX App isn't responding" message for pretty much every app on the tablet. Sometimes multiple messages pop up at the same time (even when I have nothing open). It has become extremely annoying.

 

I think this may have something to do with the fact that these apps are constantly updated, but the version of Android has not been updated since I purchased it.

 

I tried to update the firmware under Settings>About Tablet>Update Firmware. I get the message that the device is running the most up-to-date version (7.0), with Kernel version 3.18.35 (Oct 25, 2017), and Android Security Patch Level (Oct 5, 2017).

 

Is there a way to update the version of Android, the Android Security Patch Level, and the Kernel version to the current levels? I find it unbelievable that the device cannot be updated.

I can't find any tablet with that model number, so it's hard to say for sure... However, if your device isn't getting any more updates, it's probably a lower end device that the manufacturer has stopped writing drivers for. Android 7.0 came out in late 2016, so it sounds like the tablet received a few more security updates before it was dropped. I'm not sure what kind of tablet would come with such an old version of Android in 2018.

You could "jailbreak" the tablet and load a different version of Android that is still getting updates from users and 3rd party devs. This is obviously not recommended by the manufacturer or supported by Best Buy...but you might get stuck with a paperweight once the device is too old to run apps or even use the Play Store.

If there are no viable upgrade/update options and depending on the price of that tablet, how much you value your time, and how much you want to get into the world of modding tablets, it might be better to buy a new one.

The brand of the tablet is Insignia. I purchased it from Best Buy.

 

I really don't want to go through the hassle of "jailbreaking" and trying to mod it. I figured it would be supported for at least a year. My main concern is getting the error messages to stop. They pop up constantly (no matter what I'm doing) and I have to "Close App" or Wait" on a dozen or more. Other than that it works fine (read sarcasm).

One of your apps is suspect I believe. Google released a couple of buggy apps in the last few days and released quite a few updates for them.

 

What all do you use? Do you send the report to Google when it crashes? If it's constantly failing I'm more concerned about the on board flash rom that stores your apps versus an SD Card used

 

That's another thing are you using an SD Card for your apps?

 

Can you move them there?

This has been going on for months. Sometimes it doesn't happen for several hours after I turn on the tablet, other times it happens immediately. I had hoped updates would fix the problem, but it doesn't seem to. I've even returned it to factory state and reloaded everything back on (app by app) to see what could be causing the problem.

 

I mostly use the Google apps (although I do have Microsoft Office apps installed). There are no games. I mostly use it for research and writing. I use the Google browser and Google News.

 

I do not currently use an SD card for the apps. I tried that at one point, but there were few if any that I could install or transfer to the SD card.

 

I'm about ready to throw it against the wall. I've only had it about a year and no one seems to be able to figure out how to fix it. The tech support for this tablet is non-existant (it is now discontinued by Insignia) and there seems to be no chance of an update to the firmware (I'm on Android 7).

The Insignia product brand had its own site and its own forums but now it's been moved here:

It is hosted on the Best Buy site. Try posting in there. I will ask a mod to see if we can move it there for assistance as maybe they can help troubleshoot too.

Any thoughts? I'm still having this problem after trying all the troubleshootin ideas I could locate on the web.
