Memory Card upgrade....?

I have no viruses or too many programs on my new computer.  I have already gotten rid of all the junk that sits on the computer from the manufacturer.  The computer is an HP Slimline s3020n and it stinks at multitasking.  What kind of memory can I put in to beef up the performance.  Thanks for your time everybody! Re: Memory Card upgrade....?

the processor in the computer is kind of a weak one. comes with the lowest end amd dual core processor 3800. i think you should be able to upgrade that ALL the way to a AMD Dual Core 6000. This will boost the performance like crazy. they go around $100 now adays.

and u can also upgrade the ram to max it out. it will boost perform as well

Re: Memory Card upgrade....?

Did you have GeekSquad remove all the junk that came with it, and do their performance checks?

Simply removing the garbage from the desktop doesn't do much, if anything, other than remove a shortcut, those programs are still loaded on the computer if that was all you did.

Secondly, how much ram does the current computer have?  Vista Home Premium reccomends at least 2 GB of RAM for their reccomended specs.  I would suggest at least 3 or 4, the extra memory does help.

Also upgrading your processor is not for someone that is not experienced with a computer, I would have a professional do it, such as the GeekSquad.

Re: Memory Card upgrade....?

woah woah everyone says just fill it with ram...your os only uses a certain amout and if you go over taht about it is just plain sitting there and not doing squat so first figure out how much your os uses then put in what you need...

Re: Memory Card upgrade....?

his operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium.

According to Microsoft, Windows Vista Home Premium requires at least 1 gb ram minimum to run. His computer comes with only 1gb ram so it's barely enough to support the OS. plus other junk files in his computers that's using the memory. so right now probably 80% ram is being used by OS and programs. open up couple more programs can easily go up to 95-100% ram. by upgrading the ram, to 2gb, only 50% of ram will be used. so leaves another 50% (1gb) of ram for him to multitask.

simple computer math.

Re: Memory Card upgrade....?

That AMD processor might be at the low end, but it will whup an equivalent intel to pieces.  AMD processors are built for gamers and they cannot be compared GHz for GHz to Intel so I seriously doubt your processor is the root of your problems.  It is likely the memory in conjunction with Vista.  Vista is tauted for being a memory hog and the more you have, the better your machine will run according to the powers that be.  The integrated video is less than adequate as well which, combined with your memory, could slow you down.  The reviews I saw for your machine indicated that it came with a lot of bloatware which is also likely to cause you grief.  Shed everything you don't use or need.  Pretties are nice but not necessities and they will put a thorn in your side if you insist on keeping them.  Other things that I know, for sure, to be hogs that will drag down a computer...Norton products!  They absolutely will kill a system so, if a machine I buy comes with Norton, it is literally the first thing to go!
