Laptops that support Modern Standby

How do I find which new laptops support Modern Standby ?

I want one that will update Windows OS while I am not using it and also support Wake on Voice from Sleep.

My Chromebook has these features by my 3 year old PC does not.  I also need to know if this is an Intel only technology or if I can also purchase an AMD based laptop with Modern Standby.  Microsoft wesite also says this is called S0 Low Power Idle.

Thanks for any help

Re: Laptops that support Modern Standby

It is actually a Windows setting in Windows 10 which is probably why your PC may not have it.

Here is a link to a Microsoft Help Artilce that should give you more information.

Most laptops these days come with a microphone so Wake from Sleep should be supported.

When you go looking for a new Laptop you may want to consider one with a Solid State Drive, SSD.

My laptop boots from an SSD and from the time I press the power button, enter my password and ready to go is less than 15 seconds.

My desktop computer I have at work is up and running in less than 20 seconds. I takes longer becuase it has to shake hands with the network

Re: Laptops that support Modern Standby

Thanks for the link.

I used it to find this information:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/power-performance-target...

The requirements for each system are dictated by the target market, workload, and form factor. OEMs should do their own modeling of their devices to determine the best power and performance targets.

Microsoft recommends the following performance goals:

  • 500ms to resume from Standby.
  • 5% battery rate of drain over 16 hours.

These are the performance and Battery expectations for a Modern Standby System.

You can see that 500ms is really instant on, like my ipad.

I am not sure how 5% compares to a system in S3 sleep for 16 hours.

Anyway, from Reading more from Microosft site it says that not all laptops will support this feature.

To modern connected standby, a PC hardware platform must meet a specific set of requirements. These requirements govern the selection of the SoC chip, DRAM, networking device, and other key hardware components.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/platform-design-for-mode...

I wish Best Buy's website would allow me to select which laptops are considered "Modern". I went to my local store and asked but they did not have an answer at all.

Thanks,

Paul
