Laptops for an IT major

Hello,

I'll be returning back to school to study information technology.  I was thinking of getting a Macbook Pro and setting it up so that it runs windows and mac OS but I wanted to know some recommendations before I purchase one.  I'm not sure if there is a preference to laptops in the IT world but any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Re: Laptops for an IT major

Hi there,

IT person here, and I remember being in your shoes. I had no idea what my first laptop was going to be when I started going to college. A Macbook with Windows and Mac OS sounds like a great idea since you'll be able to play around in both operating systems. I don't think there is a preference that most IT people seem to migrate too. At least everyone I see uses something different. Corporate systems could be Dell, HP, Mac, IBM, etc. It will be beneficial to get experience with anything. Every IT environment that you will work in is different, so it really comes down to what do you want to do in IT and what you want to learn. Learning Windows and Mac OS will be good. I did the same with a Macbook Air a while back and ended up selling it for something cheaper and similar in specs running Windows. Spec wise, you can save a lot of money if you go with a Windows laptop over a Mac but I feel like the Mac will give you premium quality and features. I am not a Apple fan person, just my opinion. I like and work on both Windows and Mac. If you have any questions, feel free to PM Smiley Happy

Re: Laptops for an IT major

On a personal note.  If your going into IT start with an inexpensive laptop. Something that can run a word processing program and allow you to access your school internet sites.

Then, as a recommendation to an IT person, build your own tower system.  Absolutly nothing better for learning the inner workings of a computer then to build one yourself.  Many of the parts you would need can be found at Best Buy.

I would even suggest down the road if you need a job while in school to get one in the Geek Squad. Great experience and resume filler.

While going to school you won't need somethign as high end as a Mac.  Your going to want to learn how to set up networks, web servers thing like that.  And to be truthful you don't need high end gear to learn that.  Though the Macs are a great place to start.

I am not an employee of Best Buy and all opinions left on this forum are my own. Please leave Kudo’s if you like a post or click Accept as Solution if a post answers your query.
