Hi all, recently ordered a Mac Studio (base model) which I'm really looking forward to using for editing some videos. It has the 512gb hard drive.
I plan to be editing 4k 60fps footage (some in Apple Pro Res) and was looking for an external storage solution for the Mac Studio to store the files on. I'm ideally looking for at least 16tb of storage, but more is okay, and was thinking of an HDD solution as SSDs are too pricy. My concern was, will I be able to edit the files via the Mac Studio directly from the external HDD? Or will I need to be transfering the files to the internal 512gb SSD in order to not be bottlenecked?
Thank you for any suggestions for an affordable external storage solution, much appreciated.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to us.
You've asked quite the question for us and I'd be wrong to say how much I know about the subject matter. I have used several external hard drives for various reasons and I've found that it boils down to the reason for the external drive and how much you'd be willing to pay to have what works for you.
While it would be great if I told you my personal and professional choice, I think it best if I leave that decision up to you. Here is a link that leads to the drives we carry. Check the specs and any customer feedback on each one. That should help you with getting the best drive for you.

I don't video edit but rather I play computer games from an external hard drive and to look at family pictures I have backed up and it works fine for what I want it to do. Of course it has come a long way since USB 2.0 and 1.1
Some drives now are even USB Type C that can transfer and view data at insane speeds. So far I have not found any AC Adapter powered USB type C drives but the technology is out there.
