Hi michele,


Portable computers can be grouped into both categories.  A computer is referred to as a "notebook" because it can be carried with you, allowing you to work on the go.  You may carry it to a meeting for reference or to take notes, where previously you would carry an actual notebook.  A "laptop" is small enough to rest on your lap while you use it.  Both terms refer to the fact that the computer is portable.


If you are looking to purchase a portable computer, make sure you examine all of the specifications as these two terms overlap a great deal.  I recommend you visit the Computing Resource Center located on ( for advice catered to your computer needs.
