I recently bought a Dell Chromebook model 7486 on Bestbuy.com, and the keyboard backlighting does not work. The key combo Alt+Brightness puts a slider on screen that will move from minimum to maximum, but has no effect on the keyboard. They remain dark. The box it came in clearly states it has a backlit keyboard. Should I return it, or is there a fix? Thanks for any help.

Hi, modernhistorian,
Welcome to the Best Buy Forums! Thanks for posting with us.
A lot of people really enjoy the appearance of a back-lit keyboard. I'm sorry that yours seems to be on the fritz. The Chromebook should automatically check for any software and driver updates upon startup. So long as you have recently restarted the Chromebook or turned it completely off and back on, that should rule out most basic software issue. If data loss is not a concern, you can always run a Powerwash cycle to ensure this isn't related to a deeper software or operating system issue. This will reset your operating system settings. To do so, go to Settings, then Advanced, and finally select Powerwash. Have the lights worked at any point since taking the Chromebook out of the box for the first time, or intermittently (works when plugged in vs. not when unplugged)?
Just in case you need it, here's a link to our Return & Exchange Promise.
Best,
