Broken Microsoft Surface

I've googled this question so many times but have yet to find any real answer.. My surface pro 3 recently fell right on the corner, the corner is just slightly bent (hardly noticeable) and there are 2 tiny TINY little cracks on the screen that I didn't notice at first. Even though the damage is as minimal as possible the entire screen won't react to any touch! I don't have the pen, I just used mt fingers. But is hasn't had any problems before.
So that leaves me with 2 questions that I would REALLY appreciate if someone could help me out by answering them Smiley Happy

1. About how much would it cost to fix the screen at best buy? (i do plan to go to the store and ask them myself but I'd like to have an estimate first, so I kinda know what to expect)
And
2. Do you think this is purely due to the screen breaking? Or do you think there may be damage on another part as well? The only noticable damage is the very tip of one corner and the small cracks, but could the fact it's not responding be due to a diffrent part getting damaged?
And on more question, actually. Is there any risk at all that I could end up losing any documents off of it during the repair? I do digital art and animation and ALL of my art and expensive programs are on this surface!

I would really appreciate some help!

Re: Broken Microsoft Surface

You could connect the unit to an external display device if it supports that, then plug in a USB drive or use a cloud based service to do the backup yourself.

Geek Squad does provide these services for a price.

Unfortunately these electronics are so fragile that even the slightest drop without some form of impact protection can render a device useless.

One more thing, do you have backups of your programs?

Re: Broken Microsoft Surface

Hi meowmix –

Sorry to hear about the tumble your Surface took. Unfortunately giving you an accurate estimate of the cost to repair is simply something we cant do without a physical examination of your surface. That said from my time spent in-store as a Geek Squad Agent, I can safely say the repair will likely run a few hundred dollars after parts and labor. Surfaces are so miniaturized and tightly packed to replace the screen it essentially needs to be almost entirely disassembled, which takes considerable time and skill.

This is likely due to the impact that cracked the screen, though again impossible to say without a physical examination. As for your data there is always a risk of data loss in any situation with computers, and we always recommend backing up your important information before having a product sent out for repair.
