BB768 Front Panel Removal

I hate that I have to use a forum to ask a basic product question. Anyway, I have a BB768 tower that I bought from BB a couple months ago. Is there a way to remove the front glass panel to vacuum the screens over the two intake fans?

Re: BB768 Front Panel Removal

Chances are you will have to remove the screws on the bottom and take the entire cover off

However, I would advise against it as you will void your Warrenty and a Best Buy plan if you opted for it.

Also the danger of static from using a vacuum cleaner etc...

Re: BB768 Front Panel Removal

BB768

I'm not talking about getting all the way inside the tower. I would just like to get the collected dust off the screens that cover the two front fans. You can see in the picture that they are behind that front glass panel. Also, I'd just be using a little USB vacuum on the outside of the screens.

I find it hard to believe that BB would void my warrenty for removing dust from the outside of it--especially since I had to open the whole thing up to remove the shipping cushions (or whatever you call that) that were inside the tower when I first picked it up. It also makes no sense that they would require me to get the tower serviced every month or two just to remove dust.

Re: BB768 Front Panel Removal

Well you probalby don't need to remove the dust every month.

However, I think it makes perfecly good sense to void a warreny if someone opens the case.

There would/could be a lot of situaitons where someone who does not know what they are doing opens the case to maybe look at it or try to upgrade on their own and breaks something.  Then they claim it just happened etc...

Where there instructions that came with it for removing dust.

Yeah... no. Manufacturer's cannot void a warranty unless the problem caused can be proven (meaning that the burden of proof is on the manufacturer) to be caused by the owner of the device. For more details, read the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. is well and good.   But Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. is overridden by breaking the seal on the case that says if you break this seal you void your warrenty. Which breaking the seal does not actually void it but

If you read the details of  Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. you break your warrently by carrying out such things on your own and not using an authorized service and parts provider.

False, from the FTC:

The Federal Trade Commission staff has sent warning letters to six major companies that market and sell automobiles, cellular devices, and video gaming systems in the United States.

The letters warn that FTC staff has concerns about the companies’ statements that consumers must use specified parts or service providers to keep their warranties intact. Unless warrantors provide the parts or services for free or receive a waiver from the FTC, such statements generally are prohibited by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a law that governs consumer product warranties. Similarly, such statements may be deceptive under the FTC Act.

Each company used different language, but here are examples of questionable provisions:

  • The use of [company name] parts is required to keep your . . . manufacturer’s warranties and any extended warranties intact.
  • This warranty shall not apply if this product . . . is used with products not sold or licensed by [company name].
  • This warranty does not apply if this product . . .  has had the warranty seal on the [product] altered, defaced, or removed.

Also from a law website:

"Tie-In Sales" Provisions

In general, tie-in sales provisions are prohibited. A tie-in sales provision requires a purchaser of a warranted product to buy a particular item or service from a specified company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive the benefits of the warranty. For example, the following illustrates a prohibited tie-in sales provision:

In order to keep your new X Brand Lawnmower warranty in effect, you must use genuine X Brand Lawnmower Blades. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Y Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty.

Re: BB768 Front Panel Removal

Wow, I really didn't mean to open up this whole discussion about legalities. And yes, I do need to get the dust off those front screens every month or two, at least for now. I live up in the mountains in California, and, as everyone knows, we're currently in the middle of burning down the entire west coast. So, lots of dust. Also, that side panel with the beautiful view of the motherboard and all the insides had to be removed (as per directions) when I first unpacked the tower because it had a big packking cushion thing in it. What is in my way now is the front facing glass panel that's just for looks. It doesn't give access to the "innards" of teh computer.

Re: BB768 Front Panel Removal

Sorry, tdungan. I didn't mean to hijack. Don't worry about voiding your warranty but you should worry about breaking the casing if it's not clear how to take it a part. Sadly, I do not know how to do it but it certainly isn't for looks. Those fans on the front are to pull air in so it has to be pulling air from the front somehow.

Re: BB768 Front Panel Removal

No, I meant the glass cover is for looks, not the fans. Unfortunately, the screens over the fans (but under the glass) are quickly getting clogged up with dust. Not only does it look bad, but it's going to progressively block more and more air intake as it accumulates...unless I can get to it with my little USB vacuum and clear it up. It's hard to believe that I'm the only person who's ever had this problem.
