Hi there,
I noticed Best Buy now has two basic compustar options, a universal option (RS1B-AL) and an all in one option (RS1B-DC3) and I'm not sure how to decide which one is better for my needs. I have a 2019 Hyundai Kona and it says both of them are able to be used for my car. I'd also like to add on the rear defroster and extend the time the car runs for.
Thanks so much in advance!
Jon

Hello, JonathanAlbo,
Welcome to our community forums. A remote start is a great addition, I'd be happy to help you look into this!
After doing some searching, it looks like both of these options offer many of the same features including the range and starting options. Often times, settings like the run time and activating additional features will vary from vehicle to vehicle. To make sure you're getting the most accurate information possible, I would recommend scheduling a free in-store consultation so an AutoTech can take a look at your vehicle. They'll also be able to help you explore any other features you may be looking for from this system.
Please let me know if you have more questions I can help with!

Not much of a difference between the two, besides, newer make/model and style. The RS1B-AL is the older style that works the same, however, it will not accept t-harnesses (if available for your vehicle) that we carry like the RS1B-DC3. The AL has to have the bypass (included) docked into the remote start itself, where as the DC3 has it built in and just needs to be flashed with the appropriate firmware. To be honest, you'd be fine with either for your vehicle, but I did want to hop in to give a short description of whats the difference.
DC3 isn't capable of doing "manual" transmission vehicles just yet, so that is why we still have a couple AL's in stock, just in case we need to wire up reservation mode for the manual transmission vehicle to work while making sure it's not in gear. IF you have an Automatic, feel welcome to choose whichever you'd like! The other option if you didn't wish to purchase the AL, and you have a stick shift, would be the Viper DS4. Ideally the DS4 and the DC3 are Directed Electronics and Compustars newest models out.
Hope this clarifies a bit!

Thank you so much for the response, it really helped clear up things a bunch and will hopefully help out someone else in the future! In regard to programming for the rear defrost, would the autotech be able to program that when I bring my car in for the install or would I need an upgraded remote for that? I was looking at my remote options and like some of the 2 ways but I don't need the Drone as well so I was looking at either purchasing a new antenna and installing it myself if thay was an option. I purchased the DC3 and will have it installed on Friday! But I wanted to stay under $100 extra if I upgrade the remote to a 2 way and it looked like most of the 2 ways sold by best buy had extras or additional remotes which I don't really need. Thanks in advance!!

Might take a couple more messages to answer all of your questions but I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to bring us such awesome inquiries! There is nothing more frustrating than wanting to purchase something that you're not 100 percent sure on, and to trust another without doing research, well we all know where that can land you!
That said, the rear defrost is a true connection, meaning that the vehicle will have a setting that is needing to be matched by the remote start. You're not going to be capable of doing this because it's a true connection in the vehicle, often at the button itself (from behind obviously!). There isn't a feature that would allow you to "turn it on" so don't stress not being able to buy a remote to do that feature, it's the remote start that is doing that feature, not the transmitting remote. The remotes are going to allow you to increase the range and also communication to let you know whether or not the remote start has activated, or the lock and unlock commands are sent/received.
Just let the installer know that you're looking to add the rear defrost option at the time of installation, ideally before, so that they can block off the appropriate extra time. Most all rear defrosts actually turn off after a certain amount of time, or after a certain temperature has been reached, the same goes with adding the remote start. There are programming options that will allow the installer to know how your button acts (latched, pulsed, strait negative or positive trigger), and they will simulate that by programming the remote start to send that proper command down the wire. There are only a few options though for the rear defrost which will allow it to turn on after a certain temperature has been reached, by using the thermister attached to the remote start (included with DC3). So basically it is a connection that you'll never have to do anything with, just let the installer know you want the feature, long story short haha!
If I were you, I'd take a look at the 2 way remote upgrade kits that compustar offers. they do come with drone, which is a downfall for you, but it comes with the remote and antenna too. if you purcahse the upgrade kit with drone, there is no additional charge at the time of installation and we'd be happy to install the new antenna for you! open item boxes are often carried in the stores and you may find it possible to ask for a better price if one exists. Realizing it's about 50 above your price point, that is why I offer the open items which could help you save.
think I got most of what you're after, keep me posted, and I have to say this because another moderator on here would laugh. Thank you for spelling your name correctly, Jon, like mine, without the H!
Keep me posted if you need my help man!

Hey Jon (the best way to spell it, I couldn't agree more... It bothers me so much when people misspell Jon and Jonathan since it's really not that hard to read someones name and spell it correctly in my opinion!),
Thanks so much for all of the advice and the help! I finally got the DC3 remote start system installed today and I love it! I did have a couple of questions which I left that I figured you'd be able to help me with. All of your advice from earlier helped me communicate with my AutoTech what I wanted done and he said he was able to get the rear defrost working (I assume it will turn on when the temperature gets low enough since I didn't see the light come on when we tested it)! He also taught me about a cool "pit stop" mode where I can keep it running when I just need to jump out for a little.
My first question is I noticed the OBD-II port is not where it was before. Is the start module plugged into this or was it just not plugged back in the right way? Any tips for finding where it is in case I need to show someone where it is? I want to make sure I know where it is so I can answer questions in the future in case any codes need to be pulled.
Secondly, if I wanted to upgrade to a two way remote, would I need to buy a whole new set or could I just buy a replacement 2-way remote that uses the same antenna (ANT-AP I believe)? I love the idea of the two way but felt it might not be worth it to spend $150 extra just to get that and was wondering if I could just buy a single remote that uses the same antenna, and then either have it programmed or program it myself to the DC3 module.
Thank you again for all the help! I'm sure I'll come up with more questions but this is what came to mind as soon as I drove away!

Hi there, JonathanAlbo,
I wanted to jump in and help answer your questions. Since this remote is working at such a short range it does sound like there may be an issue with the receiver or remote. While materials like walls can reduce the range, 50 feet does seem unusual.
For the most part, our AutoTechs can install products or devices that were purchased elsewhere. Please keep in mind that additional accessories may be needed to get everything installed correctly.
Please let me know if you have more questions!
