My Halloween GPS story...

I know these days that having a GPS unit can seem a little passé as every car seems to have it built in, but once I tell you my story, I think you’ll agree that any GPS is better than no GPS!

It started out innocently enough.  I was driving home on the highway, just focusing on the road when suddenly out of nowhere I see this girl standing on the side of the road, right out in front of a cemetery of all places!

Now, I know what you’re thinking; “Bill, please say you weren’t dumb enough to stop and pick up a stranger on the side of a road in front of a cemetery.”

What can I say? My parents raised me to offer help when I could so I pulled over and rolled down the window.  It was very chilly outside, and all she had for warmth was a scarf around her neck “Need a ride?” I said.  She looked at me, nodded once slowly and got in the car.  As soon as she did, the car got noticeably colder, like ICE cold and it seemed to radiate from her.  “Where you headed” I asked and got ready to input her address into my GPS.  She looked at me once with her ice-blue eyes and said, “It’s just down the road; I’ll let you know where to go

Now, generally when I go somewhere, I always input the address as I get really edgy about getting lost, so this wasn’t sitting well with me, but she looked cold and lost, so I just started driving.  She was silent for many miles and we passed a number of side roads without a peep from her.  Just as I was about to insist she give me the address, she told me to turn left, which I did.  I found myself on an old country road, which was fortunately still paved, though it was old and crumbling.  Over the next few minutes, she had me make a number of turns and soon I was seriously lost, with no sign of a house or civilization in sight.

By this time the car was absolutely frigid, despite having the heat turned up and I finally pulled over.  I was about to say something when I noticed she was gone, all that was left of her was the scarf she had when she got in the car.  It should have been warm from being around her neck, but cut my calories and call me skinny if it wasn’t almost stiff with cold.  I got out of the car to see if she had maybe jumped out while I was pulling over, but she was nowhere to be seen.

After a while, I got back in the car and started driving again.  A few miles down the road, I saw a house with a light on in the front window.  On a hunch, I pulled over, walked up to the house and rang the bell.  An older woman answered, and she had a look on her face that almost answered my question before I asked it: “This is going to sound crazy, but did you see a young girl wandering around here?  I was giving her a ride, but she disappeared from my car.  She also left this as well” and I showed the woman the scarf.

With a knowing look to her husband, who had come up behind her, she said “This scarf belonged to my daughter.  Five years ago, she tried to walk home on Halloween night, got lost and froze to death right outside a cemetery.  Every year, someone just like you shows up with her scarf and tells the same story about picking her up.”  “Maybe if she had used a GPS, she would have made it home.”  With that, they closed the door and I got back in my car, programmed my GPS for home, and got the heck out of there fast.

So just remember, some night you might be inclined to pick up a cold-looking hitchhiker in front of a cemetery.  If you do, make sure your GPS is up and ready to go, or you might be the one to disappear on a cold Halloween night.

MUAWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
