Help Picking a Home Theater Speaker System for Christmas Gift!

[ Edited ]

I'm looking for a home audio system for a user that has a ps3 (so a dvd player is not needed), is HDMI compatible, probably a 5.1 system (?), and if possible to be priced between $200-$300. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey mal,

Unless the person that you’re looking to purchase a home theater system for requires an HDMI input for an HD cable box or satellite receiver, you should have a number of options available within the $200 - $300 price range at any given time.’s Home Theater System Center features category filters that should allow you to look for models that meet these criteria, but remember that models that include HDMI inputs tend to be slightly more expensive than those that do not!

Keeping that in mind, here are two things that I would strongly suggest:

1)    Find out if your gift’s recipient has a brand preference
2)    Try to read reviews of that manufacturer’s products on several different websites

Brand preferences tend to play a much larger part than a lot of us would like to admit, and the last thing that you’ll want to encounter is a blank stare because of the company name and logo that’s on the box.  If you’re not sure what companies to look for (or are hesitant to ask), simply looking around the room can often be a good way to identify anyone’s specific brand loyalties.  For example: if you happen to see several other Sony products around the room on top of this person’s PS3, chances are that looking at Sony home theater systems would be a good place to start.

Additionally, it’s also important to make sure you’re getting a wide variety of feedback about any given model that you look at – especially considering it isn’t always possible to listen to every home theater system available.  The more positive reviews a product has, the easier it should be to make an informed decision.  While not everyone interprets sound the same way, you can generally be assured that you’re looking at a quality product if most people that bought it are happy with its performance.

Hope this helps you out!
