Factory Amp With Aftermarket amp?

I Recently purchased a Sub and Amp failing to realize my 2015 Chrysler 200c came with and Amplified alpine system with a subwoofer. I was wondering if I should try to bypass the factory amp(which I don't want to do) OR install another? I can't find a lot of questions about this subject either.

Greetings Droman_1998-

Welcome to the Best Buy forums and thank you for taking the time to ask me such a great question!  I’m really only going to be able to provide you with my personal opinion, hopefully, it will assist you in determining what options are possible!

Whenever I was installing an aftermarket amp and subwoofer to a factory system, that was already amplified or has a subwoofer, I’d ask the customer if the wish for me to turn off the subwoofer so that only your aftermarket ones are playing, or to keep them both active.  The choice is always the client’s, after all it is their vehicle and who are we to tell you what “sound” you should have in your car.

With that said, the majority of factory subwoofers are no match for an aftermarket, just look at the wattage being supplied and you’ll see the difference.  Often, shortly after installing subwoofers, the factory subwoofer blows and you’d simply have to return for us to unplug or disconnect.  Normally speaking the clients are worried their aftermarket subwoofers are blown, and I couldn't imagine the thought of that, but at least I could say I provided the option to turn it off to save the trip! Smiley Wink

Really there isn’t a downfall of keeping either, but the factory will likely not be heard, and runs a greater chance of being damaged from being played too loud, now that the true subwoofers are installed.  This is the first response that came to my mind to hopefully guide you in the right direction.  I know I didn’t really provide an “answer” per se, but if I can help clarify anything else, just let me know!

Respectfully,

Also! I have a LOC and was wondering if my sub speaker wires would be perfect to tap into without the factory sub plugged in?

Good morning Droman_1998-

When installing a line output convertor, I personally would always try to find the best source which would have the same frequencies as the subwoofers, and if there is a factory subwoofer in the vehicle those would be the wires I’m attaching to for my LOC.

If you wish to keep the subwoofer plugged in, that is definitely an option that could be retained, and the signal would remain the same whether the speaker was operational or not.  You wouldn’t be able to directly tie your aftermarket subwoofers to the factory subwoofer because of the wattage differences I described in my first reply.  You’ll still need an amp and subwoofer going through a line output convertor, and where they tap their LOC would really be the only thing that “could” be different.

Great questions, and feel welcome to let ask these questions to your Geek Squad Autotech at the time of installation also, or before!

Best of luck,
