Although I do not have a 3.5 mm jack plugged into in the TV/Headphone jack, the camera is registering a connection and I always get the screen for selecting TV or Headphones. I bought this camera in April 2009. Any quick solutions for repairing it or will I have to open this thing up?

I regret to tell you that there is no way that product is working propperly, and there are no setting that can change that, so the best thing you can do is to take it back to the store and have it fixed or replaced

Ok. I was able to return the product and exchanged it for the NS-DV720P since the NS-DCC5HB09 is no longer available at BestBuy.
Model NS-DV720P vs NS-DCC5HB09
Pros: 848x480 @ 60 fps, 128 MB internal memory, ability to take pictures while recording video, SD card slot not covered by batter cover, more comfortable to hold, quick settings selection (timer, light, file delete), menu friendly with Easy setting
Cons: No HDMI cable included, no video effects, no exposure control, only 2 macro settings, no MP3 playback, no voice recordings, inability to lock pictures or video to prevent accidental delete, 3x digital zoom rather than 8x
Overall, even without the features and settings "bells and whistles", it's a good camera. I find that the picture and video colours are better that the NS-DCC5HB09. The price is not the best offered; after all for the same price it doesn't include an HDMI cable which is 50$ perk that is not included.

You don't need a $50 HDMI cable - that's just a rip-off. You can buy perfectly decent HDMI cables online for less than $10. See http://reviews.cnet.com/hdmi-cable/ for some basic background.
