Sony camcorder questions

Hi EveryOne,

On the Song DCR-SX40 is the built-in mic on the front of the camcorder or is it on the side where all the controls are?

Also why do most of the camorders have the mic on the side? Don't you think that its not catching the sounds that its filming but the person / ppl around the camcorder & not what is beening filmed ( person is standing behind it & recording some sport or activity?)

Thanks

Re: Sony camcorder questions

To your second question, ever camcorder and camera uses an omnidirectional mic.

Most of them don't - at least not the mid ot high end models.  Canon puts them on the front on all of their mid/high end models and Panasonic puts them on the top.  Onboard camcorders mics are terrible but regardless of the mic position, they will capture the sound just fine.  However, mics on the top or side may be more likely to capture noise from hand movements and can also be more easily obstructed if you're not careful about hand placement.
