Nikon D50 Err Malfunction

is there any way to fix this without taking it into a shop? I've tried releasing the shutter; however, that doesn't fix the problem.

Also, does BestBuy help with camera repairs or would I have to take it to a Ritz Camera place or some other camera shop?

Re: Nikon D50 Err Malfunction

I think there is only one button for reset on the D50 and I pushed it. But now instead of flashing "Err" at me it says clock and F- -

Re: Nikon D50 Err Malfunction

Hi zcarr,

The F-- error on a Nikon DSLR usually means there that the lens and the camera body aren't properly communicating. Other than a defect inside the camera body itself this can be caused the contacts between the lens and the body is dirty. To remedy this issue just clean the contacts, and see if this works.

This communication error can also be due to the use of a third-party lens (i.e. Tamron, Sigma, etc...). Although these third-party lenses are often very good lenses, sometimes the lens mount doesn't mate snuggly on the camera body and there is some play when you turn the lens left and right. This can cause the contacts to be misaligned causing the communication with the camera body to become disrupted. There really isn't a remedy for this issue other than purchasing Nikon lenses.

If cleaning the contacts doesn't resolve the issue, and you are using a Nikon lens, I would suggest having the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. We do repair cameras, and to arrange for repair of this camera from us just bring it to your local Best Buy® store and they will be able to send it out to be looked at by an authorized service technician.

I hope this helps!

Re: Nikon D50 Err Malfunction

I would ask on a forum like www.nikoncafe.com about the possible causes. It could be something very simple that some members may had fixed on their own. I send my Nikons back to Nikon (their service center in Melville, NY) for service directly. My closest Nikon dealers is 20 miles one way and 60 miles the other way for the other 2 closest dealers. They usually will tell you if its economically feasible to fix or not. Not worth fixing if it costs more than the camera is worth.

Re: Nikon D50 Err Malfunction

If you cant get a solution from Nikoncafe, then I would hit the repair shop route (if they dont suggest that).

It could be time for a new body also. I still have my D70 I bought in 2004 when I switched to digital from film. Just cant bring myself to get rid of it.
