Memory Card Issue

So I recently returned from vacation and took some home movies on my digital camcorder. I put the memory card on the computer I got 116 video clips. However when they come up to view only 99 videos can be played back. The other 17 when I click on them it says

Cant Play

This file isnt playable. That might be because the file type is unsupported, the file extension is incorrect or the file is corrupt.

0x00d36c4

So I look back at all my videos that do work and they are in the format .MP4 and that is the same format of the videos that do not work.

The other thing that is weird to me is I can play all the videos back on my camcorder just fine. Even the ones that will not play on the computer. I am wanting to make a DVD out of this so for these files I can not get to work what do you suggest? Any way to recover them? If I took the card to Best Buy would someone there be able to recover them for a fee? At this point I dont care how much it costs. These are vacation memories I want to keep.

Thank you so much for your time.

Re: Memory Card Issue

Does your cam corder have a connection jack so you can connect it to your computer?

If so I would try transferring the videos that way.

Are you clicking on the videos while on the memory card or after you transfer them to your computer.

Strikes me also as wieird that they play on your cam corder off the card and not off the card when you put the card in your computer.

Makes me think it may be some sort of software issue. It could be that the videos on the card are frragmented and will only play back properly on the camcorder.  Hence if you have a way to transfer them via cable I would try that.

Re: Memory Card Issue

I really appreciate you trying to help. I took your suggestion and also plugged the cable into the computer to transfer files that way and it wont work that way either. Running into the same issue. Do you know of any service or a palce where I could take the memory card to see if they can get the files off of it? I dont know what else to do at this point

Re: Memory Card Issue

Hey there, 919Florida,

Welcome to our Best Buy forum community!

As someone who just got back from holiday, I know just how previous those vacation memories are, so it's understandable that you'd want to figure out how to access those videos.

Geek Squad does offer a Data Recovery service, where you can make an appointment with your local store so they can come up with a personalized plan on how to recover the files you're receiving an error for.

Otherwise, if you'd like to try more troubleshooting steps, I'd be happy to see if there are other steps you could try if you could provide me with more details on camcorder and memory card used.

Cheers,

Re: Memory Card Issue

THank you so much for your reply. Here are my details below. I will definitly try out the Geek Squad if we can not trouble shoot it here

The camcorder is Sony Handycam HDR-CX405

The memory card used is a sandisk micro sd HC 32gb

One other question. For my future use of this camera. Do you think it is a memory card issue or a camera issue?

If you need anything else from me or screenshots please do let me know.

Thank you again for trying to help me. I appreciate it so much

Re: Memory Card Issue

Hello, 919Florida,

Great questions! From what you've told me, it seems like the error is from the memory card, not the camcorder. That said, sometimes these errors can occur if the camera was at low battery at the time of filming.

I've been doing some research, and it looks like most likely the SanDisk Memory Card will need to be reformatted. However, doing so would cause all of your files to be deleted, which is not what we want. Since you're having trouble getting all of the files on your computer, I recommend making an appointment with Geek Squad. That way they can work to get your files protected before troubleshooting further.

Cheers,
