How to Burn HD Videos to DVD discs compatible with DVD players

Hi! I'm planning to buy the Sony Handycam HDR-XR350V Hi Definition Camcorder. But I was wondering if I can convert the HD videos into DVD player compatible formats so that I can play them in my DVD player. I would like to keep a copy of my videos into DVD discs even if it means down converting the quality of the video. Does the software that comes with the Sony Camcorder capable of converting HD videos to DVD player compatible formats? Or do I still need to buy a separate software to do this? Will it just be better for me to buy a regular standard definition (SD) camcorder instead of an HD one? My DVD player, by the way can play mpeg-4 formats. Can anybody help me with this? Thanks!

Re: How to Burn HD Videos to DVD discs compatible with DVD players

Hi gaumel_mau03,

According to Sony, the Picture Motion Browser software that comes with this camcorder is capable of burning your footage to DVDs (along with many other things) so you shouldn't need to purchase any other software. I can say that if you intend on doing a lot of editing you might want to look at getting Final Cut express or Adobe Premiere Elements.

I hope this helps!

Re: How to Burn HD Videos to DVD discs compatible with DVD players

Thanks Allan! But will the DVD disc be playabe in most DVD players? i know you can burn HD videos onto DVD discs but when you play them into DVD players, they won't play bec. DVD players don't recognize the HD format. If the software that comes with Sony downconverts the HD video into regular DVD compatible formats, is the quality of the video comparable to regular DVD videos (for sure it won't be HD quality, but will the quality be fairly good?). Thanks again Allan!

Assuming the software has a decent MPEG-2 compressor, the downconverted video (to 480p) should be pretty high quality.

There are probably free alternatives, I used to know of them but I forget what at the moment.  I've primarily been converting HD videos down to lower resolution/bitrate MP4s or MKVs  for posting to Facebook/YouTube - HandBrake is excellent for that purpose, however it doesn't encode to MPEG-2.
