Can't buy a DSLR body-only from a store. Online only!?

So I was all ready to buy a new DSLR body. I waste my time driving over and I'm told it only comes with the crappy kit lens. Why would I want to buy an almost pro body with a crappy kit lens. Makes no sense to me.

I really wanted to have that for a shoot this weekend. Highly disappointed.

BB really caters to the average, mainstream consumer, and as such, carries mainstream products. That's why you won't find many body-only packages in-store. Higher-end products that BB sells are almost always relegated to online-only, as it's not worth the cost to stock them in stores.

Don't they actually come in separate boxes and you just get a discount when you buy both?

Often no. Usually, it's sold as a single box with the body, kit lens, and camera bag. Sometimes without the bag.

Frequently the manufacturer ships the kit bundled, with both lens and body in the box.

In some cases, the items are individually boxed within the larger box (my Pentax K10D kit was like this), but the vendor's inventory system only handles the outer box.

Some specialty photo vendors will do "vendor bundles" like the "B&H Kits" which are distinct from the standard manufacturer kits, but BB is not one of them.

Which is why I go to an actual camera store for any body or high end glass. Only lens I bought from BB is a 35 1.8. Other than that its a trip to Chicago or mail order from B&H'. These kits are fine for people just getting into photography as a hobby.

Hi rurik4464,

It is true that most of our DSLR cameras come as a kit that includes an entry level lens in most cases. I definitely agree that it makes no sense to purchase a professional level DSLR, and then put an entry level lens on it. We actually do sell a few body-only professional-level DSLR cameras, but these are limited to stores in certain markets that have been shown to sell enough of them to be competitive.

The models we sell as body-only in some stores are the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the Nikon D700, the Nikon D300s.

I hope this helps!
