A Traveling Library

Nothing beats the smell of a new book. Or the feel of its pages as you anxiously turn to read what plot twist the author thought of next. Not to mention the satisfaction you get from closing a thick hardcover after investing weeks or maybe even months of your free time reading. Am I right?

Then why am I sitting here gearing up to tell you why I need a Kindle in my life? Well, if you’re going to deploy overseas soon like I am, I think having one might be my saving grace.

Reading provides the escape you need from the real world. At least for me! I’ve been trying to read one book a month, and I’ve grown to love unwinding at the end of the day with an engaging book rather than a Netflix show (but of course I still love binge watching my favorite series now and then). Reading allows me to leave whatever craziness I’m dealing with or the stress I’ve felt all day in the real world, and venture somewhere else for a while.

This is the type of escape I imagine I’m going to need while deployed. Alone time is going to be hard to come by, and we’ll be working long days. I’m definitely going to need a good book to get lost in at the end of the day. While I wish I could bring six months’ worth of books with me overseas, that sadly wouldn’t work the best. My duffel bags are going to already be packed to the brim, and my living quarters won’t be the most spacious. Books can take up a lot of room, which brings me to the point that a Kindle would be ideal while deployed.

I wouldn’t want anything too fancy when it comes to a Kindle, so the 6” Amazon All-New Kindle with 4GB of storage would be perfect. It’s affordable, holds thousands of books, and has a built-in adjustable front light to allow reading indoors and outdoors. Also, considering it might be tossed around a bit during my travels, I’m going to want a cover for my device. The Kindle Paperwhite cover is water-safe, has a magnetic clasp to secure it, and prevents unnecessary battery drainage by putting the Kindle to sleep when it’s closed.

There are countless books in the world just waiting to be picked up by the next hungry reader, and I know I’ll be itching to escape in a story at the end of my days overseas. It’s hard for me to stray away from reading a physical book, but I’d be beyond happy to have countless books at my fingertips all packed into one small device on my upcoming deployment.
