It’s the day you’ve been preparing for since you were a kid. Grab your pirate hat and cutlass, and join your friends and family in talking like a pirate this September 19!
How Did Talk Like a Pirate Day Get Started?
Like most great things, this holiday started as an inside joke between friends. John Baur and Mark Summers’ were playing racquetball when one of them screamed “Aaarrr” in an outburst of pain. After that, it became a yearly tradition for them to talk like a pirate for a day. It became an official holiday in 2002 when they shared their practice with columnist, Dave Barry.
Tips For Celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day
One great way to get you and your friends in the pirate spirit is with some tropical beverages! You’ll be talking like a seadog in no time after a couple of piña coladas, which you can make at home with our Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker.
Once you’ve mastered talking like a pirate by using terms like shiver me timbers, blimey, scallywag, and landlubber, it’s time to watch a film about your fellow pirates. Luckily, there’s a lot of great options!
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is filled with adventure, humor, and characters you can’t get enough of! Growing up, my favorite ride at Disney World was Pirates of the Caribbean, so The Curse of the Black Pearl with its references to the attraction is my personal favorite of the films.
Walt Disney’s Treasure Island is a classic the whole family can love! It’s an adventure based on the novel by the same name, where a young cabin boy finds himself in a battle with the pirate, Long John Silver, for treasure.
If you’re more interested in a pirate’s hunt for treasure than their adventures out at sea, we’ve got you covered! The Goonies' show that even landlubbers can be part of the treasure hunt fun!
Another great way to get into the pirate spirit is by playing Sea of Thieves! It lets you experience the thrill of a pirate’s life, such as sailing, exploring, looting, and fighting off other pirates who are trying to steal your booty.
Pirates Have More Fun!
I call my boyfriend Pirate, as that’s what he was dressed as when we met at a Renaissance Festival six-years ago, so you could say this holiday has a special place in my heart. It goes to show you never know what could happen when you’re a buccaneer!
