Don’t Leave Us Hanging—High Five!

COPA_Richfield_Candid_09_NoExp.jpgI have a confession. It’s deep. It’s dark, and I’m going to share it with you—I have an unholy urge to give people high fives like it’s the 90s and I’m the star of some sort of demented kid-centric sitcom. I only share this with you because the third Thursday in April is the one day those of us who love high fives don’t need to worry our enthusiasm won’t be reciprocated. That’s right, National High Five Day is April 18 this year and I want to celebrate till it hurts…literally.

National High Five Day, an unofficial national holiday, was started back in the early 2000s by a couple college students who decided to hang out and give high fives to passing pedestrians on their campus. It’s a day of celebration, all about “giving high fives and spreading good vibes” according to their official website here. What better way to spend your day than sharing joy and high fives either virtually or in person?

It’s so satisfying to raise your hand in the air and just link with another person on such a visceral level, if only for a brief time. Maybe it’s this desire for human connection, but National High Five Day has really grown in prominence over the last few years. This has allowed National High Five Day to raise money for charity right along with their efforts to spread good feelings. See more about the National High Five Day Virtual High Five Challenge and their work with children impacted by chronic illness on the National High Five Day website which I linked above.

After spreading around high fives to all my friends, and participating in some awesome charity opportunities, I don’t know about you, but I’ll want to rest and sooth the sting. Maybe I’ll even give in to temptation and splurge on a Massaging Hand Sauna! Who knows? If National High Five day can catch on, then anything can happen!
