The selfie has dominated the 21st century since it became widely used as the term for taking a picture of one's self. In fact, in 2013 it was the most popular word and the Oxford Dictionary added it to it's notorious list. For those that can remember a world before the selfie, it may seem a bit foriegn. The kids that are growing up post 2010 will never know a world without it. I was fortunate enough to grow up somewhere in between, alongside the selfie - I saw it emerge, adapt, transform and become a staple of modern photography. And, because of that, I'd like to think my selfie game is on point!
There are a few key essential elements to getting the perfect selfie. The first? Great lighting. Natural light is your best friend, my friend! Find yourself a window with that nice white soft light flooding in. Make sure you have a nuetral colored back ground without many distractions. After all, you're the center of this photo.
If you're a real pro, you'll have a Right Light. These nifty spotlights shine a dimmable LED white and amber light directly at you that illumates your appearance and enhances the subject of any photo. Pro tip: You'll usually notice when these are used if there is a white circle reflection in the eyes of the subject. But shhhh, I didn't tell you that!
The next thing you will need is the perfect angle. We've all heard of the mom selfie, but unless you're a mom, it's not for you. Getting that arm extension all the way out there so you're able to view the background behind you will make all the difference. Picture this, if there was a line in the middle of your screen, you want your chin just right on top of that line. Find your good side, and tilt your head ever so slighlty to the side.
A great way to capture everyone in one shot with the perfect angle is with a Selfie Stick. We've all seen them while out and about, and regardless of how we look using them, they do help! Angled just right, you can achieve a photo that doesn't even look like a true selfie! Pure. Photo. Magic.
These are just a a couple of the many tips that are out there about how to capture that stunning selfie, not to mention the power of adding a filter. However, the best way to find out what works for you is to play around. Open your front-facing camera and go to town! Play with lighting, create drastic and daring angles. It's a selfie, a self protrait of sorts, and should represent who you are and how you're feeling at that particular time. There's no wrong answer!
