America and the Pursuit of Hoppiness

Beer is big business in the United States. How big? From its brewing to packaging, transportation, sale and consumption, beer is a $350 billion per-year industry. Humans have been consuming beer for over 5,000 years and in Stout.jpgmedieval times beer was just as, if not more, common as a drinking source as water. With beer production and consumption spanning to all parts of the world, American beer companies have a challenge staying relevant with so many competitors and recent trends in the beer industry. Want to know more? Crack a cold one and enjoy some fun facts and while you read along this National American Beer Day.

It’s probably no surprise that Bud Light is the most popular beer in the United States (not to mention a top-notch logo 😉). With that being said, it certainly is not the oldest. Bud Light was introduced to the American public back in 1876 in St. Louis, MO. The oldest beer in production that is still alive and strong today has survived the test of time making it through the Civil War and The Prohibition Era. D. G. Yuengling & Son, also popularly known as just Yuengling, is the oldest brewing company in the United States and was founded in Pottsville, PA in 1829 by David G Yuengling from Germany. It’s the official state drink of Pennsylvania and is still owned by the original family. This adds to the list of other great things from this great state: The Fresh Prince, Hershey’s Chocolate, and good ol’ fashioned American Beer!

As popular as American Beer is, trends show that its popularity is decreasing. Statistics lead to the fact that the millennial age group tends to prefer mixed drinks and wine, and there is increased competition with popular Mexican beers such as Corona and Modelo. Not to mention, the sudden increase in popularity with smaller batched craft beers has taken the nation by storm, so much so that in-home brewing has become something normal. In fact, one Christmas, a gift from my uncle was a growler of home brewed beer.

We here at Best Buy even sell some of the necessary kits and tools to make this happen. The Mr. Beer - Northwest Pale Ale Complete Kit comes with everything you need from bottles to the ingredients to make beer with a full malt taste, refreshing woodsy hop aroma and rich amber color right in your home. Once your beer is brewed, you’ll need to keep it cool. Unless, you enjoy warm beer that is. One way to do this is with a personal Beer Froster. The SPT Beer Froster allows you to maintain a chilled temperature between 23° and 41° Fahrenheit and the sleek stainless steel design makes it work with any esthetic your home may be going for.

It’s the year of the beer, my dear! Few things come in comparison with the refreshing taste of a chilled beer on a hot summer day, or a crisp ale on a chilly winter night. Whatever theHome Brew Kit.jpg season or occasion, there’s a beer for you and many American brewing companies accommodate for such particularities.
