Why is Best Buy Selling My Email Address to Manufacturers After Making a Purchase?

Apr 04, 2020 - I purchase a bObsweep - PetHair Plus Robot Vacuum - Charcoal

April 10, 2020 - I receive the item

April 17, 2020 - I get an email from B0bsweep about Mother's Day specials (which BTW link me to one of your competitors to purchase). This email was sent to the email I use for my Best Buy account which I rarely if ever use anymore aside from Best Buy. No, I did not visit their website. No, I did not sign up for their emails. When I click "why I received this email", they claim I signed up on their website. Even if I had, I would have never used the same email I use for Best Buy as it's an older email from when I setup my account long ago at BB.

What the heck, this is unacceptable, how is this going to be corrected?

This is all laid out in Best Buy's Privacy Policy.  You can reach out to the privacy manager using the steps on that page, and/or unsubscribe from the marketing emails yourself.

Sharing

If you post something on a public forum on one of our digital properties, it should come as no surprise to you that it may be viewed by the general public.

We may share your personally identifiable information with suppliers or business partners to fulfill your requests or perform on our behalf a contract that we have with you.

Sometimes we share information with suppliers and business partners for internal Best Buy uses. The easiest examples of what we mean by this relate to information technology — they may be processing personally identifiable information, but we make sure we have contracts in place requiring that they only use the information in support of Best Buy.

We also may share personally identifiable information in an attempt to enforce our legal rights, in response to a request from law-enforcement authorities, and when we are required to do so by applicable law. Also, please note that if we think that sharing personally identifiable information is going to protect Best Buy or others from harm, that’s what we are going to do.

Finally, Best Buy comprises multiple corporations in the Best Buy family. These family members may share personally identifiable information with each other. And if one of these family members later goes off on their own, either after being acquired by a third party or merging with a third party, they will share personally identifiable information with that third party but subject to the applicable privacy policy.

I read through the policies prior to this post, and in your own quoted post they state to customers that they require these parties to use the information in support of Best Buy. Sending me links to purchase a vacuum (after I've purchased a vacuum) from a Best Buy competitor does not appeaer to be in support of Best Buy and therefore in violation of BB's Privacy Policy.

For all we know, Best Buy could get a chunk of commission from those branded emails.  Hard to say.  In either case, hopefully you have a clear idea now of how to move forward with opting out of anything you don't want to receive.

While it appears you don't care about your personal information or a company you trusted breaking their privacy policy, I do and I feel violated by this betrayal. What I'm looking for is how this will be corrected for myself and everyone else going forward.

Re: Why is Best Buy Selling My Email Address to Manufacturers After Making a Purchase?

Odd question, but do you use Gmail as your email provider?  They sometimes show ads in your inbox in the form of an email when it's really not an actual email.  Just like how you'd sometimes search for things on the internet and suddenly see ads about that search, it could just be your email provider showing you ads.  Just a thought.

Fair question. The email address in question is not a Google provider email account, nor am I confusing it with an adwords solicitation.

Ah, gotcha.  Thanks for entertaining my theories.  Stay safe out there, caliwolv.

Re: Why is Best Buy Selling My Email Address to Manufacturers After Making a Purchase?

Hello, caliwolv!

Thanks for reaching out for support again on our Forums. I can completely understand your concerns surrounding the manufacturer emails you are continuing to receive after already purchasing a vacuum. We never want our customers to feel violated or lose trust in us regarding personal information being shared.

Best Buy has a strict Privacy Policy in place, and I have to echo Sam15's sharing of that information above. If you have any questions about our privacy practices, I encourage you to email PrivacyManager@BestBuy.com, call (888) BEST BUY or (888) 237-8289, or write to the address listed on our privacy page (shared above). You are welcome to opt out of emails you are receiving as well.

All the best,
