Mine has been stuck in "Preparing" for a full day now. I would have thought it would come through right after I make my order.

 

Or is there actually a person at Best Buy working these in the background?

Welcome to the Best Buy community forums.  I tend to shop online more often than in-store because, in my experience, it's usually faster across the board.  I'm sure I would be looking for updates as well if my order seemed to be stuck in a "Preparing" status for more than a few hours, though, and I'm glad you reached out to us for help with this.
