I recently purchased an item online for around $600, but it was not functioning properly and I was almost sure it was a counterfeit. I returned the item the same day. A week later, I received a call from my local store stating that my refund had not been processed and that they had cash waiting for me to pick it up. However, upon checking my bank account, I saw that the refund had already been processed. I was out of town at the time of the call and told them I would call back later. Upon returning home, I saw that they had called me six more times, leaving messages that I needed to go pick up the cash or risk losing it and that if I didn't they would send it to me by mail. This sound fishy and I don't think Best Buy send cash by mail. however the agent had all my information and when I called back it was indeed the Best Buy store and not a random scammer on the internet.
I am not sure what to do next and am considering my options.
I am thinking about going to the store to inquire, but I am unsure what to say and if I will be met with cops. I am also considering ignoring them and seeing if they continue to call, and then waiting for the cops to show up. Another option is to call 800 and ask them to charge my card. I am really not sure what to do here.
I am worried that I might be in trouble and I am thinking about talking to a lawyer. I have looked up the number and it's my local Best Buy where I returned the item.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Has anyone had a similar experience? What would be the best course of action in this situation?

That does sound odd. You will need the advice of a moderator here who works in corporate. In general when a refund is processed and you see it in you're account that's it, Your return is considered ultimately complete and you can go along on your merry way.
I've never heard of a store calling myself saying they had the cash ready to hand you. You did mention the word counterfeit in your posting. Is there a reason why you suspected this? Did you mention this when returning an item? That terminology can also raise a red flag on a store level.
As you already got your money back I don't honestly think anyones going to "come after you" but Best Buy corporate needs to clear this up.
