Canon M50's 4K & Best Buy's restocking fee

I looked at cameras in store and the salesperson recommended the Canon M50 due to it's 4K capabilities. I went straight home and order one (I would have purchased in store but I left a $150 BB gift card at home.) When I picked up the camera, I realized that it did not have full 4K, but UHD. More importantly, the crop factor for 4K filming on this camera is absurdly high making close up filming useless.

Neither of these facts had been mentioned by the salesperson (or a restocking fee.) So I returned the camera only to find out about a $90 restocking fee. I checked online and the restocking fee is not posted on the product page or very noticeably any where else either. I was returning an item because it's main selling feature according to the salesperson was useless. I guess $90 of my $150 gift card birthday present was a restocking fee.

Anyway, I would not suggest the M50 if 4K is one of your requirements. I also would not suggest Best Buy if you are buying a camera. Their sales staff are not knowledgeable and their restocking fee is expensive especially if you were to buy a higher end camera.

I purchased a different camera from a different online vendor that is also an authorized dealer & camera experts (I won't say who because I don't believe it is allowed on here) for way less than Best Buy has it advertised. I typically buy TV's, PC's, and all sorts from Best Buy. I will only buy from them now as a last resort now. Best Buy, I hope the $90 restocking fee was worth it.

Re: Canon M50's 4K & Best Buy's restocking fee

Good afternoon, thh1,

Welcome to the forum, though I wish you had found us under better circumstances! Picking out a great camera can be a bit of a task, as you have to ensure it has the right features that will work best with the moments and scenes you're attempting to capture. It sounds like the sales associate you worked with had good intentions in recommending the Canon EOS M50 to you, so I can imagine you were eager to get this order placed with the gift card you received for your birthday to treat yourself! With that said, I understand it didn't work as well as you would have expected, and left you wishing to return it.

Under our Return & Exchange Promise, mirrorless cameras would incur a 15% restocking fee if opened and returned. We do our best to make customers aware of our return policy, as it is available on BestBuy.com at all times, as well as posted in multiple places in stores, and on store receipts. I apologize if you were unaware of this at the time of your purchase or return, leaving you caught off guard by this fee.

We greatly appreciate the time you have taken to share this experience with us, as it is through customer feedback such as yours that we are able to see where and how we may better ourselves. If you should have any other concerns, please let us know.

Regards,

Re: Canon M50's 4K & Best Buy's restocking fee

The restocking fee should be clearly posted on the purchase page. It definitely is not (I just double checked to make sure I was not stating something incorrect.) You have to go searching for this policy...why is that? My guess is that the policy would deter some buyers from purchasing.

I know I am just one person and am totally aware that losing my business will not make the slightest difference to Best Buy. However, I will get a small amount of satifaction each time I purchase an item somewhere else that I would of purchased at BB, which will quickly surpass the amount taken from me on this one purchase.

Post your policy on the purchase page or at least on the checkout page (or better yet both!)
