I called Best Buy after being scammed out of $2000.00 by a phone scammer who 'pretended' to be Apple Tech support to inform me my bank acct was being hacked and I needed to go to an Apple store to get this resolved asap. Not having an Apple store nearby they sent me to Best Buy to purchase that amount in $500.00 increments to buy new encryption number to save my acct from being drained. I totally bought this as legit since I called back the same number that is the real apple to verify and it was exactly the same automated system ver batim that I get when I call the real Apple. They put my laptop on remote and showed me the foreign hackers draining my acct. This looked so real to me I immediatley got in my car and went to purchase these cards. A few hours later a girlfriend told me I had been scammed and suggested I call Apple again and give them the case numbers I was given just to be sure. Well..rest is history. There were no case numbers. I called Best Buy got no help, went to the Soquel, CA store where this all took place and mgr there said gift cards had been cashed already and nothing he could do either. I have filed a police report, FTC and this also happened at the Home Depot next door the same time for $500 so all in all within 15 short minutes I was scammed out of $2,500. I am 64 year old woman and did not know this could even happen. To make a long story short, after checking online I read that Best Buy employees had been trained to detect these scams. I was able to purchase 4 $500 gift cards within 15 min of eachother with the SAME cashier ! I am not blaming anyone but myself but had she questioned me this would have never happened. To make matters even more frustrating - Home Depot graciously gave me back the $500. Best Buy had not responded to any of this, Home Depot cared about this and their customers are important to them. They have my loyalty for life after this. Where are you Best Buy why have you not stepped up to do the same? I have purchased many things from your store thru the years. Am not feeling so good about you now.

I'd like to also ad that i gave this whole story over the phone to a corp person at best buy the other day, I offered all my recipts, sheriffs report and FTC report, gift cards - everything I have and they would not give an address or email on where I could send what I have to show proof of what happened to me - nothing. 2500.00 is A LOT of money to lose in 15 minutes and if Best Buy has a special scam dept why am I not given this info so I can try and recover my money from this theft - and as i said, Home Depot refunded my $500 loss within days of reporting this them. THAT is customer service, Best Buy could learn a lot from such a business. Why do they not take some responsibilty for the same cashier not suspecting something apparantly they were trained for ?? Because they don't care that's why.

these scammers are getting quite good at what they do, and it's understandable to be frustrated with what's going on. I'm not completely sure there would be anything Best Buy could do at this point except to take a closer look at the gift cards to see if there are any funds remaining. Sit tight for a moderator to swing by and take a closer look into this for you, and please have your original purchase receipt ready to go when they move you to private message to help out.
No promises on what can be done, or any outcome, but I do hope you're able to get an official response!

They cashed the cards an hour away within minutes.. All three gift cards have a zero balance. As did Home Depot's but they did not care, they saw it as theft and they refunded me my money back. Best Buy did not care enough to listen after 3 calls. Gift cards cashed? Too bad lady nothing we can do. i will never buy there again and am telling anyone who will listen this story.

We can replace the remaining balance on a lost, stolen, or damaged gift card, as long as you have the original purchase receipt. Please call 1-888-716-7994.
Gift cards are treated like cash, and once depleted they'd be unable to be reinstated. Realizing you've spoken with 3 representatives already I'd like to apologize for this happening to you. Thanks for taking the time to register with the community, here on the Best Buy forums, to share your feedback!

This was a theft sir not just cashing a gift card - do you not understand and how do you feel that Home Depot honored my theft and your company just recites rules and regulations that have nothing to do with a scam or theft. This is how you treat your customers, you have seen my last dollar at any of your stores what an insulting reply.

Although my signature states that I do not speak officially for Best Buy, I did state I was sorry for you. Having said this, the number provided does cover "stolen/theft" but only for the remaining amount to be replaced. Knowing the cards have 0 balance on them I'm not entirely sure what options may exist, but since you've spoken with 3 other representatives already, likely their response was the correct one.
I think it's fantastic the other store was able to assist you, but I'd be unable to speak on their policies and procedures.
If you're waiting for an official response, you'll need to sit tight for a moderator to get the opportunity to lend a helping hand. Have a wonderful night!
