Very unpleasant photography purchase experience

[ Edited ]

Hello,

I have been a Best Buy Elite Plus member for a long time, having spent quite a bit of money in your store. Member ID: {removed per forum guidelines}. I have enjoyed almost all of my purchases. With your excellent return policy, I have been able to exchange or return the few that I have not enjoyed or had problems.

I really enjoy photography and a Best Buy near me has an excellent photography department. Probably the largest in the state of TX.I have been saving my Best Buy Reward Points ($130) to purchase the Sony SEL90M28G Macro lens. Your website states that this lens is compatible with my Sony a6000 camera.

After using the lens for a few days, I discovered it was not completely compatible with my camera. The lens body is so wide that it blocks the auto focus illuminator on the body of the camera. This makes the lens almost unusable at night since the lens cannot see what it needs to focus on. It will simply move back and forth through the full range of motion, never stopping. After a more thorough inspection of your website, I noticed the SEL90M28G is a full frame lens, meant for the Sony a7 or a9 series, not the APS-C style cameras like the a6000 series. I also, noticed several Sony full frame large bodied lenses on your website are said to be compatible with the Sony APS-C cameras. Then, I also noticed there were not many true APS-C lenses available for the Sony a6000.

I did some research and decided to try a Nikon D5600 DSLR camera since it had a very wide range of compatible lenses. I went back to Best Buy to exchange the Sony lens for a Nikon DSLR. I was hit with a 15% restocking fee despite my explanation that the lens is not compatible with my camera even though the website said it was. This was very irritating.

I went ahead with the exchange and got the Nikon D5600. As I was talking with the camera salesman, it was interesting to note that he acknowledged the SEL90M28G was not really compatible with the Sony a6000 series cameras. The Nikon ended up being way too complicated for me and I decided to just stick with my Sony a6000. I took the camera back and was hit with ANOTHER 15% restocking fee.

I have now been charged $300 in restocking fees that started because the website misrepresented what I wanted to purchase. This makes me not trust the website or sales staff. It actually makes me reluctant to purchase there too. I have never had any issues with exchanges or returns until now.

Finally, when can I expect my $130 in Reward Points to be put back to my account? I want to purchase the Sony SEL50M28. The website states it is an APS-C lens compatible with the a6000. I hope the website is accurate.

Thank you for your time, Paul

Warning....  even with a Nikon 5600.... there are lenses that will block the flash and possibly the illumination light.

Pay attention to Nikon's D lenses... they will not auto-focus with your camera model.

Re: Very unpleasant photography purchase experience

Hey pfp22972,

We truly appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us here, and I am sorry that you were hit with two restocking fees for items that did not meet your expectations. The store is correct that we charge a 15 percent restocking fee on returned DSLR Cameras and Lenses/Mirrorless Cameras and Lenses.

I can certainly understand you being upset that the restocking fee was charged on the lens that is not completely compatible with your Sony a6000 mirrorless camera. It is true we have this advertised as being compatible with your camera, but the listing also states "Ideal for use with most a7-series, 35mm full-frame cameras with a Sony E-mount".

It can take up to two business days to see your points back in your account from a returned purchase. I would like to see if this store can offer anything additional in this matter. What is this store's location?

Thanks,

Re: Very unpleasant photography purchase experience

Hi Allan,

I get what you are saying about the statement "Ideal for most a7-series." However, when you search for lenses on the Best buy website and choose Sony a6000 in the "Compatible with" filter that lens shows as compatible. I could not use autofocus at night at all due to the lens blocking the autofocus illuminator and was subsequently charged $165 for the return of a product that was not truly compatible. The gentleman at the photography sales booth acting like he knew that was a known issue did not make the situation any better. He did seem quite knowledgeable. Pehaps I should have talked to him before my perchase.

Everything was returned on 10/09/2017. It has been a week and the 130 points are still not back to my account.

The store I frequent is the Grapevine, TX location.

Thank you for your time,
