Store Manager Refusing to Price Match

[ Edited ]

The store that this was at is 1901 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33305

I needed to go to my local Best Buy to get an SD card for a new camera. I prefer the going to the store rather than buying online because the items that I get are usually price matched with amazon prices without any kind of issues, and that way I don't need to wait on shipping times. So I picked up the card that I wanted, specifically the 128GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Card with Adapter which was 37$ (instore price didn't match bestbuy online store price of 33$). So I pulled up the same exact product that is sold and shiped by Amazon for 21.95$ on my phone and went to the counter to checkout.

I have price matched many times at this Best Buy, but for some reason the employees didn't want to do it this time.

When checking out I showed the reduced price for the product that I was buying and the employee wouldn't accept the information on my phone and had to use her own to look up the memory card. There have never been any issues in the past when using my own phone to show the employees the product on amazon, but I went along with it. When she was searching on amazon, she kept pulling up the wrong listing that was posted by a third party seller and not amazon. After steering her to the correct listing she called over the manager to do the price match. Immediately the manager was acting very rude towards me saying that the product that was on amazon wasn't the same. I disagreed with him and was showing him the details of the product on amazon and how the matched the details of the store memory card exactly. He said something along the lines of "I have been working here for 15 years, which means I know what I'm talking about and you don't." At this point he takes my phone out of my hand, and goes back to the origianl listing from a thrid party seller and states that was the correct posting. At this point I am frustrated and insisted that he goes back to the listing that I was initially trying to show. After getting him to go back to the correct listing, he sits there looking over the ad posted by amazon. After a few minutes he goes "ah ha, the model number isn't exactly the same, if the model numbers are off by even one letter or number I won't price match." At this point it is obvious that he is finding any excuse to not price match because only the last four letters of the model number were different while the rest was the same. I told him that the small difference indicates different factory locations or time that the product was made, but at this point he wasn't listing to anything else that I said, so I just walked out very annoyed and bought the memory card from amazon. It is safe to say that I will not be shopping at Best Buy again anytime soon if managers refuse to price match a legitimate competing price.

Here is the online Best Buy store add for the memory card (picture online doesn't look anything like what I had in my hands in store)

And heres the Amazon listing for the same exact product that the manager refused to price match.

And here is an image of the memory card the I recieved from amazon. It is in the exactly the same and is in same exact packaging as what was in my hands in the store.

*Edit*

Here is the same SD card from SanDisk's website which the BestBuy website is currently referencing for its updated price.

Re: Store Manager Refusing to Price Match

The Best Buy and Amazon items have different Model Numbers and in turn different UPC codes.  According to the price match guarantee, the items must be identical.

Card you linked from Best Buy - SDSQUSC-128G-ANCMA

Card linked from Amazon.com - SDSQUAR-128G-GN6MA

I was able to find the same card we carry on Amazon, but only from a 3rd party (which would not qualify) and it was currently $29.89.

Why Sandisk makes so many different models with the same specs is beyond me, there are very few items in the store that seem to have this sort of issue.  Most are storage of some sort.  Due to the nature of validating price matches, the store system would not even register the Amazon card as a "match".

With that being said, this information should have been presented in a respectful manner, and the manager should not have made it seem like he was only trying to say no.  The price match policy, like most of Best Buy's policies, are expected to be followed.  In a case like this, where the item is not identical, it would be up to the store leader on whether they wanted to make an exception and price match anyway.

I am a Best Buy Employee, but the views that I post are my own and not that of Best Buy.

Re: Store Manager Refusing to Price Match

I feel like the policy should take into account that model number for the same exact "identical" product can vary slightly based on region / factory that the product was manufactured in. Same specs, same packaging, same labels and same description should be considered an identical product.

Re: Store Manager Refusing to Price Match

Hey Cryophilic,

I certainly understand where you are coming from on this, and I am sorry if you left this store feeling as if we had done anything we could to not take care of you. As jdogg836 pointed out the model number of an item we are price matching must match the model number being purchased from us exactly. It sounds like this store was correct to deny this price match, but it does sound like they could have communicated this better to you.

Thanks,
