Sales tax on Mint Mobile prepaid service

I recently purchased a $60 Mint Mobile prepaid kit at a Best Buy store. It turns out I was charged $65.55.

Isn't tax included with the cost of the service?

Buying prepaid phone services at Walmart and Walgreens don't charge sales tax on it. I also looked up Amazon.com and they are able to sell the same item without charging sales tax and free shipping.

The whole point of buying the prepaid service was to save money but I feel ripped off here.

Re: Sales tax on Mint Mobile prepaid service

Hello, Machray,

Welcome to the Best Buy Community Forums!

I appreciate you taking the time to join us and write us about your purchase. Also, thank you for choosing us for your phone needs. I am here to help where I can.

The amount of sales tax charged on your purchase depends on many factors, including the type of item purchased and the state where your item is purchase or shipped. Going on their website, and ordering this SIM Kit directly from mintmobile.com, they are also charging me federal/state taxes, and a regulatory recovery fee. I am not sure on the other websites you mentioned, but I am happy to look at your specific purchase.

Please, by clicking on the blue button next to my signature, send me a private message with your Customer Service PIN, full name, phone number, and e-mail address. I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Sales tax on Mint Mobile prepaid service

Yes they are charging sales tax on their end, which is included in the $60 cost of the prepaid service. That means both best buy and mint are charging me sales tax on the same item.

That’s a bit odd, Machray. Please, send me the information requested so I can check on this double tax charge. I look forward to your private message.

Re: Sales tax on Mint Mobile prepaid service

I've looked at MintMobile, Amazon.com, and Wal-Mart.com....All 3 charged me the same, around $5.70 in taxes and fees.

Looking at MintMobile's Plan Terms and Conditions, it states that the plan is just for the plan and that you are required to pay the taxes and fees on top of that.  See section 10:

https://www.mintmobile.com/plan-terms-and-conditions/

That would match up with what we see at every other phone carrier, whether it is prepaid or contract.

I am a Best Buy Employee, but the views that I post are my own and not that of Best Buy.
