That is correct. Best Buy can't issue a credit for an account that is no longer valid. So a gift card was issued. I don't think corporate could make an exception and issue you a check. This is standard on all businesses that accept debit and credit cards. You will just have to accept the store credit at ths time.

As it sounds like you’re aware, under most circumstances if you return one of your purchases with us, your refund should go back to your original form of payment, as outlined in the terms of our Return & Exchange Promise. If the debit card used is no longer active, or you closed your banking account between the time your purchase was made and the time you returned your purchase, the store would process your refund back to store credit.
