I purchased a PC today, only to find out that a store an hour away from me has an open-box version (same exact PC) in "Fair" condition for nearly $150 less than what I paid. Would I be able to:
take my PC to this store (it's still in the box but I really want to get it out tonight, I won't though if this makes returning it a hassle)
2) return it
3) immediately turn around and purchase the open-box item?
What are some downsides of an open-box item that may make it worth just keeping the brand new one? Thanks!

Open box is a good way to save money if you can deal with the imperfections of the product that was returned and resold as an open box. However in the fair category there may be moderate to severe issues associated with the product including glitches with the computer, missing critical items, bad cosmetic condition and then some.
Of course all products sold open box do come with a warranty. If you try to get help from the manufacturer and they deny the warranty on the product, Geek Squad can help setup a repair for the item.
Those, however that are not in the technical know how to deal with the nature of open box items prefer to buy new. Its a preference for many.

I forgot the other part of your question. I dont know how you paid for it but generally you can return and purchase the other unit. However if you used a credit or debit card, refund terms and policies apply.
From the Return Policy:
With a few exceptions, we will reimburse you for returned items in the same way you paid for them. If you prefer, you can make an exchange for the same item. For returns by mail, once we receive your return, we will process it within 7–10 business days. Depending on your bank's processing time, it may take up to 10 days after we process the return to reflect on your account. If you paid more than $800 in cash or more than $250 by check or by a debit card without a major credit card logo, we will refund you by check within 10 business days. Any amounts deducted from a gift card will be credited to the gift card. If you no longer have the gift card used for an order, please call us at 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) with your order number handy, and we'll be happy to send you a replacement.
So essentially if you used a debit or credit card it may be faster just to ask for store credit so your refund is immediate and you can use the rest on another Best Buy purchase next time from the left over on the GC.

Good Morning, bakugo.
Welcome to the Best Buy Community Forums. I certainly understand wanting to take advantage of any deals or savings on big purchases and wanting to learn more about our open-box items. Hockeycanuckjc covered many of the points regarding our Return & Exchange Promise well, but I will add one more thing. The typical return and exchange period is 15 days on most items, such as a laptop. You will be able to return that laptop as long as it is returned with all accessories within that time period. You can also return your items at any Best Buy store without issue.
Regarding the open-box item, Best Buy divides open-box items into different categories based on criteria of the returned item. Things such as missing accessories or cosmetic damage can adjust the category the item falls into. For the fair category, this can mean that the item has 1. Significant cosmetic signs of use and 2. Vital accessories may be missing. I would recommend speaking to one of the store associates so they can identify these things for you and help you with making your final decision.
Please feel free to send me a private message if you have any additional questions.
