Re: Door receipt check

Don’t shop at Best Buy often - maybe a couple times a year. I was taken aback today when I was leaving with a Best Buy bag in hand and the person at the door asked for a receipt. I have never been asked before even when Christmas holiday shopping. I was annoyed mainly because I had taken the time to fold up my receipt and put it on my wallet, which I placed securely in my tote just 10 seconds before heading to the door. I wanted to ask what if I had gotten an email receipt but he got a phone call before I could ask. Was he going to ask me to login to my email to pull up the receipt? If this is indeed the policy of Best Buy then it should be enforced just as the warehouse clubs do - all customers should be checked. The way Best Buy does it is ripe for the possibility of discrimination. This is my first time shopping at this particular location - probably won’t go back.

Re: Door receipt check

We have a method in store for validating email receipts should you have one. It is worth noting that not all receipts get checked. In an effort to expedite the path of customers out the door while protecting store assets, only some types of purchases meet the verification criteria. The procedure is a company wide policy, and while the criteria for items have changed with the technology it has been around in some form for as long as I’ve been a Best Buy shopper. I can remember having my receipt verified when I bought my fist cd Walkman in 1992.

Re: Door receipt check

And therein lies the problem - as stated above “not all receipts get checked,” leaving it up to the customer’s imagination as to why they were singled out to be checked.

Re: Door receipt check

So I called the Best Buy Customer Cares # to see if I could find out the policy on checking store receipts and the representative completely evaded the question even after putting me on hold.

Re: Door receipt check

As the intent is to interrupt as few of our shoppers as possible while also protecting assets, you will not get a firm answer on the policy. It’s kept internal so that criminals cannot find and exploit weaknesses, which ultimately result in higher prices, tighter return policies, etc.

As I alluded to in my previous post, the criteria has nothing to do with the individual and everything to do with the product being purchased. The social media team will be by shortly when they reach your post in the queue, perhaps they can provide more information that is authorized to share.

Re: Door receipt check

They check mine no matter what I buy if it was bought at a department register instead of the cashier by the front door. Seems reasonable.

Re: Door receipt check

Thanks nckhammond. I actually attempted to call the store but the call rolled to a different store who was able to provide more information. But your comments are much appreciated and not infuriating like the previous comments. I don’t have a problem with checking receipts per se. I know there are bad apples out there. But a simple “show your receipt at the door” statement from the sales clerk (instead of watching me fold my receipt neatly, place it in my wallet, and then put it in my purse) would have avoided the whole problem of me setting everything down I was holding and fishing through my purse to retrieve a receipt I had in my hand 10 seconds earlier. So maybe that would be my suggestion for Best Buy (especially if what jdogg836 says is true and Best Buy wants to expedite the path of customers out the door) because it certainly would have gone a lot more smoothly if I had known I needed to keep the receipt out. But I’m over it now. Enjoy what’s left of the Labor Day weekend!

Re: Door receipt check

Good morning Casualshopper,

Welcome to our forums, and thank you for sharing your experience with us.  I apologize for the delay in our reply to your post, as we’ve become a bit backlogged over the past few days.  I truly appreciate your patience while we work to reply to our customers as soon as possible.

While I’ll be unable to go into specifics with you, there are a variety of processes each Best Buy store is expected to follow in order to prevent loss within their stores, one of which can be checking the receipts we’ve provided our customers as they leave the store.  We’re hopeful this would be a smooth process for our customers, and I apologize if this experience added any frustration to your visit.

Respectfully,
