Deceptive Advertising for Kindle Paperwhite

Beat Buy needs to be careful about how their stores are displaying products. A few months ago I bought a Kindle Paperwhite at the store in Chattanooga, TN. I was expecting to pay full price as that is the only thing that was listed. When I brought it to the register the cashier said it was on sale, so I thought, "Yay, it's my lucky day!" Back to the present, I'm trying to turn off these annoying ads and find out that I actually bought a promotional version and it was on sale so they could display ads even when I don't have internet, and charge me $20 to disable them. I had no idea because only the full price version was advertised and when it rang up on sale I wasn't explained any special conditions of the sale, so not knowing about this, I assumed it was just a regular sale with no strings attached. I'm so irritated right now. I would've preferred to be given the option to pay full price rather than to find out later and feel like Amazon conned me because I had no idea there were supposed to be 2 options (one with ads and one without).

Re: Deceptive Advertising for Kindle Paperwhite

Sorry for the weird typos... my phone tends to change things to words it thinks are "better". I'm just so disappointed that I fell into this situation through no fault of my own. Nothing was explained to me and the display did not include information about the sale, only the full price option. So why would anyone who hadn't heard of this before think anything other than it was just a regular sale?

Re: Deceptive Advertising for Kindle Paperwhite

Hello, LeahH,

Welcome to the Best Buy Community forums. Autocorrect is my enemy as well, so I get it.

I’m sorry that the Kindle Paperwhite you bought wasn’t quite what you were expecting. The only Kindle Paperwhites we sell currently are those that come with Amazon’s Special Offers. We try to call that out in the product description online, as shown here.

I apologize if the in-store tags didn’t call that out. If you could send in a private message, through the link in my signature, with your name, email address, and phone number, I’d be happy to document that in our corporate systems.

Thanks,

Re: Deceptive Advertising for Kindle Paperwhite

The only way to get the non-advertiser kindle paperwhite is to buy it from Amazon directly. They used to offer the two versions in store, but they haven't in a few years. So yeah, sadly the only way to get rid of the ads when you buy it from a third party (like Best Buy) is to pay that additional fee. It is really obnoxious.
