Best Buy you are selling a TV that is SCAMMING CUSTOMERS for money!!

I just bought a 55in Sharp LED 2160p Smart 4K UHD TV with HDR Roku TV (model# LC-55LBU711U) from my local Best Buy and was excited about getting it going! I installed a swivel wall unit to hang the tv on and I proceeded to connect the tv to the wall unit BY MYSELF! I turned on the tv and had to go through the activation process. An error code came up when activating the cROoKU TV portion and it stated that I needed to call cROoKU TV for more assistance. I called and the operator tells me that I cannot activate my tv unless I pay them 69.95 to register with Roku. WHATTTT???? So i just bought a tv that i can't watch ANYTHING on unless I pay 69.95 for a service I don't watch anyway. Where was the WARNING before I purchased the tv??? But the crazy thing is the tv screen itself displays as written " Note: Roku does not charge for activation or support." Wait a minute sounds like a rip off to me!! I told the operator that he can keep the Roku subscription because I have cable tv, Netflix, Hulu and a firestick that I use. Operator and manager refused to activate my tv. Matter of fact a manager hung up on me!!! Best Buy please show some customer loyalty and make Roku advertise this extra charge prior to customers buying this brand.

There are no extra charges.  While it is not uncommon to get an error when attempting to activate Roku services, it is typically because the unit has no internet connection.  Usually after connecting to the wifi or hardwiring to a router it activates with zero issues.

Where did you get the contact number for Roku?  I feel you may have been duped into calling a scammer company.

Here are direct quotes from the website:

"No. Roku does not charge an activation fee or charge for support. There is NEVER a charge to create a Roku account."

and

"We are aware of certain fraudulent websites that are not affiliated with Roku, but who claim to offer “Roku Technical Support”. These sites will endeavor to charge a fee or extract personal information. Roku does not endorse any third-parties to offer troubleshooting or provide technical support to our customers. These scammers create official-looking webpages directing users to provide their contact information so that they may be contacted by a “support agent”. These webpages are most commonly encountered when users search for Roku support using a search engine and follow links to sites outside of the roku.com domain. All our customer support webpages have URLs that point to the roku.com domain, for example support.roku.com. If you come across a webpage whose URL points to a domain other than roku.com and that purports to offer technical support for Roku products, the webpage is NOT affiliated with Roku and you should NOT follow any instructions on the webpage."

Hi, Larry_G,

Welcome to the Best Buy Community forums. Thanks so much for taking the time to share this with us.

I'm happy to hear that you were able to get that TV working. Like jdogg836 said, they don't charge activation fees. I'm hopeful that some folks who have the same issue will see this post and be helped to not fall for that scam number.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
