I recently purchased a laptop at the location in Mountain View CA. I needed a replacement for work, and I chose Best Buy because of their credit card offer of 10% off first days purchases. Also, because this was an emergency purchase, the financing option available with the credit card would have been incredibly helpful.
I asked about the card, and the associate said I could absolutely apply and use the 10% discount and do financing, no problem. I applied for the card during checkout, entered the code given in the pamphlet (which i still posess), and was approved for a credit card. The pamphlet contained details about two cards for which I could apply. However, I was never presented with a choice during the application and I was "instantly approved" for the card I did not intend to apply for.
When I asked the associate if I could apply for the other card, he said "sure, I just have to restart the application process; no problem". I repeated the application process for the correct card, and the associate told me I was "not instantly approved this time". So instead of being able to use the benefits as advertised (which was my sole reason for choosing best buy at all), I had to resort to paying to full amount on my credit card. Also, this absolute misstep on Best Buy's behalf, hard hit my credit score. Not once, but TWICE, just for the pleasure of being taken advantage of.

Good afternoon, Lukillith,
Thank you for taking the time to visit our community forums. A computer is no small purchase so I can understand wanting to take advantage of promotional financing.
There are two different options when making your first purchase using aMy Best Buy credit card. You can receive 10% back in My Best Buy rewards or choose the promotional financing offer. You are unable to combine both offers.
I'm a bit confused by your message. Can you please clarify which card you were approved for? To my knowledge, the same application is used for both of these cards so applying again would not change the available options.
Did you have the opportunity to speak to a store manager about your experience? If not, I would be glad to make sure they were aware of your feedback. Do you remember the name of the associate you were working with? What date and time did you visit this store?

Yes, apologies, allow me to clarify,
-The associate did not review that pamphlet with me at all, and only handed it to me so I could use the pin inside. It wasn't until I was reading the pamphlet during my application that there were multiple cards for which I might be applying.
-Initially, I was approved for the My Best Buy Visa Gold. Credit Card, and just before clicking "accept" i asked the associate "Is it possible to apply for the other one in the pamphlet, or is this this the only card I can be approved for?"
-His response was "It looks like it's the most powerful one, but you can try for the other one"
-Given that I now believed there to be an option, I decided to restart the application for what I believed to be for the My Best Buy Visa Platinum. Credit Card.
-We repeated the entire application process, after which the associate said "oh...it looks like you weren't instantly approved. You'll have to buy it (the laptop) normally.
-I proceeded to pay for the laptop in full with my Credit Card
- I did not have time to speak with a manager as I was already going to be late for a work deadline.
-I visited the store on Monday July 6, 2020 at around 3:30 PM.
-Since my initial message, I've received a letter from Best Buy Credit Services notifying me that I am not approved for the Platinum card, and that I was offered the My Best Buy Gold card, but declined the offer. Given all this, That's clearly not the case.
-If there's anything that can be done, please let me know
Thanks For your time.

Good morning, Lukillith,
Thank you for getting back to us with this additional information. Andrew is unavailable at the moment, so I wanted to step in and make sure we’re addressing your post while he’s away.
It sounds like there may have been some confusion regarding the application process of the My Best Buy® Credit Card during your visit to our Mountain View, CA store, and I do apologize for any disappointment this experience has caused. To clarify, any application for our card would be for the My Best Buy® Visa® Platinum account first, and if not approved for the Platinum account, the application would then automatically be considered for a My Best Buy® Credit Card, and a My Best Buy® Visa® Gold account, in that order. Unfortunately, a second application would not produce a different result than the first. This is outlined in the card application terms and conditions, and I apologize if this information was not accurately relayed to you during your visit.
We can’t hope to improve the level of service we’re able to provide our customers without feedback like this, so I truly appreciate you taking the time to call our attention to your visit. Please know I’ll be forwarding your feedback to the appropriate leadership at our Mountain View, CA location, so they can address any coaching or training opportunities that may present themselves.

Good morning, Lukillith,
Thank you for following up with Sean. He is currently unavailable but I would be happy to step in.
As you may be aware, these cards are issued and administered by our partner, Citibank. We would be unable to make any changes to your credit report. While I can't guarantee any specific outcome, I would recommend contacting Citibank directly at (888) 574-1301 to see what options may be available to assist you moving forward.
