TotalTech is a Total Joke

A couple days ago I chatted online with a Geek Squad rep and asked if TotalTech would be able to recover accidentally deleted files from a Sony XQD flash memory card and if that would be included under my TT membership.  He responded absolutely to both questions and sent me info how to set up an appointement online.  I set up the appointment for the following day at a local Best Buy.  I drove 40 minutes to the location and when I handed the XQD card to the Geek Squad rep he looked at the card as if it came from another planet.  He then warned me it was highly unlikely they would be able to recover files from flash memory and it was just as unlikely if they would even have the adapter to read the card.  Sure enough, no adapater for a flash memory card that has been around since 2012.  I also mentioned that there are several software options online that state they can recover the deleted files.  I downloaded one and it did find 60 files, but before I paid the $60 registration fee to actually recover the files I thought I would check with TotalTech since I was already a paid member.  The Geek Squad reps response was that the software is likely a scam.  OK.

So a complete waste of an 80 minute round trip and 30 minutes at the store. I have now been on the phone for another 30 minutes with Geek Squad to see if they even have the capability of recovering the files if I bring in my own adapter (sigh).  Needless to say, I am not very confident in the abiliities of the Geek Sqad outside of supporting much more than basic component setup and certainly do not see myself renewing this service.  Looks like I'll just pay the $60 and cancel my membership.  Who has this much time to waste?

Re: TotalTech is a Total Joke

Welcome, SeveH,

Thank you for taking the time to visit our community forums and letting us know about your experience getting assistance with this flash drive. I apologize for the delay in responding to your post, we are working as quickly as we can to respond to all of the messages we have received recently.

As someone with a very wide variety of memory cards and drives around the house, I know how easy it is to lose track of an adaptor. Best Buy Totaltech membership is designed to help you with almost every type of product you may have so I can understand your disappointment to hear that these local Agents were unable to assist you accessing this data.

Have you been able to get assistance since making this post? If not, I would be glad to look into this to see what options may be available to help you access this data moving forward.
