Power surge

Bought new washing machine in November with 5 year extended warranty. That wonderful storm went through in July and we got numerous power surges with lights going on and off repeatedly and then going off for day. Best Buy said the manufacturer covered the 1st year for whirlpool and they could only cover if manufacturer said they won't. Well whirlpool does not cover power surges so I contacted best buy where I was told surges were covered. Then management said no they don't cover storm damage and my warranty won't cover it! WTH!! It was the power surge that took it out. I have been getting less and less satisfied with Best Buy but this is totally insane. I have had many things fixed from surges by Best Buy in past. Why will it not cover my washing machine now? What good is the warranty?

Re: Power surge

I'm sure the moderators will research this and get back to you, however I can tell you my home owners and in the past my rental insurance both covered power surges. If they dont cover it you may want to try that direction.

Re: Power surge

Hi, RubyRajkowski,

Welcome to the Forums!

I know that during the spring and summer when storms are most prevalent and powerful that even sometimes the best of surge protectors are not match against mother nature. I'm so sorry to hear that your new washing machine was affected by a power surge that had happened. I would be wanting to get this taken care of, and would be just as shocked as you are to learn this about my protection plan.

I took a look at the Terms & Conditions of our Geek Squad Protection, and would like to highlight the section that shows that we will cover power surges even if the manufacturer does not. That part is below:

...Coverage for hardware failure described in Section 5.1 will begin when the manufacturer’s warranty expires except that if the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover one of the listed Coverage items in Section 5.1, this Plan will provide coverage on the Plan start date.

Therefore, you should be able to schedule an appointment with our Geek Squad team by calling us at (800) 433-5778.

Please let me know what questions or comments you have about moving forward.
