Hard drive for 3 weeks

I'm having a major problem. I purchased a WD 4tb hard drive from best buy. I promise you I only used it for 3 weeks and suddenly it stopped working. I didn't drop it, mess with it any way. As I was uploading files it just stopped working. I did everything I can to make my computer read it but nothing. I went back to best buy to what they can do. The said it's no longer working and that all you files need to be recovered to be saved. My warranty didn't help to recover, only they can give me another hard drive. But that's not what I want, I want my files to be recovered. They told me that I would cost me $500-$1500 to recover my files. I just bought this device, how can this happen? I dont have that kinda money. I only used about 700gb. They said they can't cover the recovery. But the thing is I JUST BOUGHT IT, and now they want me to spend $500-$1500 to get my files. This is not far at all. I didn't do anything to this device. I really really dont have the money for this recovery. It wasn't my fault. What I think it was during the stocking of the product that someone one dropped it and still put it on the shelf or a customer dropped it and put it on the shelf. WHY MUST I SUFFER THIS FROM THIS. If you can help me I would really appreciate it or point to me someone in charge for these type of serious issues.

Re: Hard drive for 3 weeks

If it's a defective product, they'll replace it for you under the Western Digital warranty. However, the data you put on the device is never guaranteed in any way by any company. (Some MFGs offer a monthly/yearly plan that covers data recovery, but it's an additional fee)

It's always a good idea to have multiple backup locations for this exact reason. The physical storage of an external hard drive is cheap and easy, but as you're seeing now, it's not without its faults. A good idea would be to also back your data up using some sort of cloud storage like OneDrive, PogoPlug, Carbonite, SugarSync, Mozy, etc. This way, losing one of the backups won't cause you to have to pay for data recovery.

I would just as upset if this happened to me.
