As a student, I know that even a day without a functioning device is a big deal so I can understand wanting to know exactly when this will be completed. I'm not quite sure I understand your original post. Can you please clarify what you mean by this device being taken in for service without your knowledge? Generally, the store where your product was dropped off at can provide the most information, have you been able to get in touch with them? If not, I would be glad to follow up with them on your behalf.
