XBox One / PS4 Launch Input

3 weeks to PS4 and 4 to the XBox One.  The first major hardware launch in nearly a decade (Wii U hardly counts), and opportunities abound!

First, great job on pre-orders and hardware merchandising.  Areas are clear and clean, pricing and release dates are clear.  I do think it is a miss to not call out there is no backward compatibility.  These systems represent the first time ever one of these systems did not play the previous generation games.  Also, trade-in is a key message for Best Buy, but there is no mention at all of console options anywhere in the area.

However, software leaves a lot to be desired.  Consider:

  • Merchandising includes few easy to find dates
  • Launch titles are not clearly identified
  • Titles with release dates well into next year are staged on the launch display side by side with launch titles
  • A printed receipt with the expected launch date inside the plastic housing is not informative if invisiable
  • Launch dates are very clear and published with few changes months in advance, why not use them on the game case cover?
  • Bestbuy.com does it right by clearly calling out launch day titles and giving them a unique page.
  • ...and lastly.  Many games have 12/31/2013 as the release date when it should be TBD.  NEVER DO THIS.  This mistake was made with the consoles, but corrected.  Please clean up the rest of the SKUs.

Clarity for the customer is key.  Displays are confusing and I have personally witnessed families standing at the display unsure of which games to consider.  A game like Halo should not be anywhere near a iconic launch display when it is estimated nearly a year out.  Nobody pre-orders like that, it can only lead to customer disappointment.

I agree software release dates are frustrating.  A bit of it has to do with a LOT of software programmers having to rewrite a game to fit the new system.   I was frustrated with one of my most anticipated games Elder Scrolls Online.

However, Best Buy has nothing to do with Release dates and for some of them they simply do not know.  BB has to go with what the manufacurer lets them know.

And if BB was to take the High Road and either simply not list them or insert TBD they will generate more frustration and potntial loss of sales.  People will go to Target and say hey, at least Target is has some idea.  But Target does not, they are under the same onus as BB.

I agree BB should have  a special section on their web site for Release Date Titles Only, that are confirmed.

I operate a web site with thousands of products. It is really only a 15 to 30 minute operation to make the addition.
