Ever since I can remember, the item page (before you add to cart) will show that an item is "Available for Pickup Today at X store" and then when you go to actually select a store when you add it to your cart, it says the item is either unavailable for pickup or takes 3-5 days for them to ship it. This seems to be due to the fact that the store only has 1-2 of an item rather than 3+.
Generally speaking, most people should only be looking for 1 of an item, so wouldnt it make sense to let the locator see stores that only have 1? I understand that there could be the very slim chance that the last item is a damged/open box clearance, but giving people the ability to at least get the "Store pickup could not be fulfilled" email is better than them going to another retailer because they were just told it was Unavailable because the store only had 2 of them.
I've included an screenshot of what I am referring to with the Item Page showing pickup today & the store selector showing only available for
Items that are listed as ship-to-store typically aren't carried at most of our retail locations, so I don't know that this is feasible. Store pickup is also automatically disabled whenever on-site inventory of individual products falls below a set threshold to avoid unnecessary disappointment -- the current limited stock may be display models for items we still carry or may already be in the hands of another customer.
What does everyone else think?
Ship to store was not any part of my suggestion, just part of the screenshot showing the issue with store pickup.
While I know its not practical for items that have display models, it would be good for Media such as Games, DVDs & CDs. Yes, it would be dissapointing if you were to get an email back saying that an item couldnt be found, but when the other option is to have the customer buy the item elsewhere, isnt that a risk worth taking?
Maybe another option would be for things that show 1-2 in stock to say "Low Stock - Call for availability" rather than just "unavailable".
A way for Premier Silver members to access the RSS inventory system would be a nice feature, but thats another topic altogether.
