Model a home in-store with Internet of Things gadgets like Disney’s House of Innovations

Status: Tell Us More

  • House of Innovations is a popular attraction at Disney World. Consumers are more and more interested in the latest and greatest gadgets.
  • The Internet of Things is becoming popular, and it's hard for consumers to find out what it is, or where it would fit in their lives. Yet it will be a massive category in the future. If people had guided tours of a model home in the store, it would make for a really neat experience and inform and educate consumers about new gadgets that would make their lives easier.
  • It would be so neat to show how the Nest Thermostat would automatically go to away mode after a user's car( using Automatic) leaves the garage, or how all the lights(using Philips Hue and SmartThings) would turn off after a family leaves. Most consumers are unaware of how to use these or how to set them up.
  • Showing how convenient it is to not get out of bed to turn off lights(just use a smartphone) or turn off a stove accidentally left on wirelessly would be an instant seller.
  • Showing how one could have an instant party with Sonos or Airport Express speakers would be awesome- many people are still unaware of this possibility.
  • The Geek Squad could be trained to become home automation consultants, and drive further sales too.
  • BB could create automation starter packages and showcase them in-store. Since BB is a retail store, they have the space to show function and give hands-on demos, something that online retailers can't do.

I very much doubt that we would do this idea given the premium floor space is in our stores, but I would like to hear if others would like to see this as a reality. Make sure you vote for an idea if you like it.

Sounds good the BestBuy "Inside" edition, seems like a sponsor agreement plus tax break could help with cost of the unit's.

Concept sounds great but as mentioned they just don't have the floor space these days (even though I know a few places they can get rid of *cough* )

Well, I think a virtual concept would be an easy way around the biggest problem. There could be a computer of osme kind in the store or youc ould even use your own smartphone/tablet/computer at home and have like a house you can diagram out and then add gadgets and such to specific rooms.
