Get points on reward zone card by paying with a gift card

I tend to pay for most of my best buy purchases with a gift card and its not right and not fair that I don't get points on my reward zone card. When I first got the card I did get points for it and now i don't. I think you would have more satisfied customers if you would do this

Thanks for sharing. The reason we don't provide Reward Zone points for purchases made with gift cards is because we award Reward Zone points, to the person purchasing the gift cards, when they buy these cards. If we gave points when both the gift cards are purchased, and on the purchase the gift cards are used for, customers could get double points for every purchase.

I purchase best buy gift cards from a 3d party (Manna), and therefore do not get reward points at the time of purchase.  How do I receive credit for the money I spend on the gift cards, or a way to receive credit for the purchase when I use them at a store?

I agree - there is no double dipping when you purchase gift cards elsewhere. Moreover, I actually helped BestBuy, as they did not have to pay the merchant fee to my credit card company.

I would question this practice for two reasons, both bsaed on the premise that reward points are based on what you "spend"

1 - if Gift Card purchases are not "spending" they would have to be a discount, therefore, I should not pay sales tax on any purchase amount that is reduced by the gift card as a "coupon"

2 - Best Buy is improperly reporting revenue.  If BBY follows GAAP, then they are reporting gift cards as a liability, and realizing the revenue at purchase.  However, this is inconsistent with the manner they are actually handling gift cards.  If BBY accounts for gift card sales in a manner consistent with the rewards program, then they should realize the revenue at the time of the gift card sale, and reduce revenue accordingly for any "discount" based on the use of gift cards.

I recently bough some gift cards to use and figured this out as well, how can they take our money even in the form of a gift card and not give us our reward points!? I get not giving us reward ponts when we use a coupon or certificate but not giving us points for gift cards is absolutely absurd!

To follow up to best buy's resoning on why they say they don't, say I bought the card on a rack at 7-eleven, does 7-eleven have a best buy account that they get rewards for? I doubt it. So no double dipping. The fact is the points should go to the spender of the card not the buyer, your setup is definately flawed. No other rewards system is set up so the spender gets left out, as usually nobody thought it through.

@devlin85, I believe the reason this policy is in place is that a customer should be able to get points when they purchase the gift card. If they could also get points on their purchase made with the purchased gift cards they would essentially get double points on their purchase.

The SPENDER should get the points, NOT the BUY, Best Buy is the only company that has it backwards like this. For obvious reasons, it's a gift card, which means the points should get gifted too.. not the way you are suggesting is correct. Like I said, I go to.. umm.. ANYWHERE!! with a gift card and use my "rewards" I would get credit on my account being the SPENDER of the giftcard, NOT the BUYER.. Needs to be fixed..

Yes this is wrong. I get gift cards from hilton honors and get over $1000 in cards every year. I choose to get BBY gift cards instead of other things with my HHonors point. I spend way more than 1k at BBY and I don't get points? I used to work for you guys and many of the rewards were great. Now I'm being penalized for getting gift cards. Totally should fix this problem. Heck, I buy from you instead of amazon just to help you stay in business. Maybe I'll just use my hhonors points to get Amazon gift cards instead!
